UWRF Celebrates More Diverse Cultural Traditions
Nov. 5, 2010--Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas – most Americans are likely familiar with these holidays.
Others may be less recognizable to many. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is making an effort to change that.
“It’s important to give campus a broad idea of what is happening at UWRF and to let them become more aware of diverse groups and organizations. It gives a sense of our diverse heritage perspective here at the university,” says Andriel Dees, Chief Diversity Officer.
Increased visibility of the traditions and holiday celebrations of many cultures is present in several locations across campus. Students, faculty and staff can find these events listed on the campus’ OrgSync calendar, at the large display case devoted to diversity and inclusion in North Hall, and various other spots throughout UWRF. The events located on the OrgSync calendar were created to make OrgSync users aware of the diverse holidays and events happening on campus. These holiday events can also make a connection among the diverse students at River Falls.
“The goal of the bulletin board that I created was so that students could see diverse backgrounds and that there will be more interaction and engagements within each other,” says Dees. “I want students and faculty to approach someone that they don’t know because of their diverse background or culture and be able to feel comfortable around them.”
