UW-River Falls Horticulture Students Take First
Oct. 29, 2010--Members of the Horticulture Society at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls headed to Iowa State University in October to participate in the Mid-American Collegiate Horticulture Society conference and competition where the team placed first overall.
Brita Thompson, a senior horticulture major from Hillsdale, took first individual overall; and Tyler Kelley, a senior horticulture major from River Falls, took third individual overall.
Team members include Thompson, Kelley, Stacey Reetz, a senior horticulture major from Osseo, and Molly Gilbert, a senior horticulture major from Sturgeon Bay.
The three-part competition included plant judging, plant identification, and a general horticulture knowledge exam. At the conference the students took educational tours of the Iowa Arboretum, Iowa Department of Natural Resources state nursery, Iowa State horticulture farm tours, and Evergreen Gardens. They also had the opportunity to hear guest speakers about many topics related to horticulture.
Other conference attendees were Jesse Read, a junior horticulture major from Belle Plaine, Minn., Lindsay Heggemeyer, a junior horticulture major from New Prague, Minn., Audra Zentner, a sophomore horticulture major from River Falls, Kyle McCarville, a senior horticulture major from Mineral Point, Zach Steeno, a junior horticulture major from Oneida, and Nik Wagner, a freshman horticulture major from Eden Prairie, Minn.
