FEMA Approves Funding for Emergency Shelters

Oct. 1, 2010--A fund of $93,593 has been approved for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from the Federal Emergency Management System (FEMA).

The grant is for the construction of two stand-alone safe shelters at the two laboratory farms on campus. The funding is available through the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) program whose purpose is to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters. A previous PDM planning grant allowed UWRF to hire a consultant to assist in the development of a FEMA-approved PDM plan.

“There is no current start date for the construction project to begin, but there is anticipation for the project to begin in the summer months of 2011,” says Blake Fry, special assistant to the chancellor. “UWRF is the first university in Wisconsin to be awarded a PDM grant and have a FEMA-approved PDM plan.”

FEMA provides 75 percent of the funding, with a 25 percent local match of from the university. The university is responsible for administering and implementing the project.
