Food Science Students Receive Scholarships
Sept. 24, 2010--Three food science students from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls were honored with $1,500 scholarships through the Midwest Food Processors Association (MWFPA).
Nur Badrol Hisham, freshman food science and technology major of Malaysia and Megan Kleiber, junior food science and technology major of Gillett received the Kenneth G. Weckel Scholarship, and Jeffrey Faust, senior horticulture major of Malone received the Carleton A. Friday Scholarship.
The two scholarship programs were created by the MWFPA in honor of leaders in the food processing industry. The Kenneth G. Weckel Scholarship is named for a University of Wisconsin food science professor who contributed greatly to the advancement of vegetable and fruit processing through his research and teaching. The second scholarship is named for Carleton A. Friday whose family founded the Friday Canning Company of New Richmond.
The scholarship winners are invited to attend the MWFPA’s 106th Annual Convention and 83rd Food Processing Crops Conference, the largest and most established food processing gathering in the Midwest at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.
“The MWFPA recognizes the vital role played by agriculture and the food processing industry in Wisconsin’s economy,” said MWFPA President Nick George. “These scholarships help students to continue their education and support the growth of these two major Wisconsin industries.”
