Summer Concert Series to Rock Remodeled Amphitheatre
JUNE 7, 2010--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls’ annual summer concert series, this year dubbed ‘Chill on the Hill,’ kicks off June 8 with an impressive lineup of musicians.
The first to play in this year’s series are the bands Shoeless Revolution and Sepia Tone. Future shows this summer include Green Tea, the Chris Silver Band, the Tommy Bentz Band, Kids from Wisconsin, Chicago Afrobeat Project, Pert’ Near Sandstone, and the Ethan Keller Band.
All performances will be held at the newly remodeled Melvin Wall Amphitheatre, located on campus along the South Fork of the Kinnickinnic River.
Recently the amphitheatre’s shell was repainted, repaired, and additional backstage space was added. The badly deteriorated original limestone seats were replaced with new stone tiers.
“The wall and aisle improvements will provide a more safe and comfortable environment for the audience,” says Karyn Wells, event coordinator for UWRF’s Office of Student Life. “In addition, wheelchair accessible space offers inclusive seating options for our campus and community.”
Much of the financing for the remodel has come from donors. Law’s Nursery, a prior UWRF Outstanding Service Award recipient, in Hastings, Minn., was the first to offer support in the form of river birch and amur chokecherry trees. The trees donated by Law’s will grow to shade the amphitheatre.
Remodeling will continue throughout the summer. The UW-River Falls Foundation staff hopes to raise $30,000 to purchase picnic tables, recycling bins, flowers, and additional trees. Funds will also be used to purchase barriers to protect the amphitheatre from daily foot traffic, and to outfit the space to serve as a classroom.
“When developing the plan to landscape the renovated area around the amphitheater, it was critical that the plan would create additional space for outdoor learning,” says Julie Stucky, director of annual giving.

The concert series is free and open to the public. Freshly grilled food and ice cream will be available for purchase. In the case of rain, events will be held at either the Falcon’s Nest in the University Center, or North Hall auditorium.
