Photographer to Exhibit Work in Gallery 101
AUG. 18, 2009 | The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Art Department presents “Viaggio con Le Viste” by UWRF alumnus and photographer Brett Kallusky Sept. 2 – Oct. 2 in Gallery 101 in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building on campus. A free, public reception for the artist is Sept. 30 from 3 to 4 p.m. in Gallery 101.
Kallusky received a Jerome Fellowship in 2002 for an artist residency at the New York Mills (Minn.) Regional Cultural Center. He also received a Fulbright fellowship and travel grant, allowing him to study in Italy during 2005-06. Kallusky currently lives in St. Paul and teaches at the Art Institute of Minnesota while continuing to pursue and exhibit his photography.
He says photography is akin to poetry: “For me, this work is unequivocally visual poetry. These photographs are recorded vignettes of geography and history, both regional and national, from southern Italy, photographs that when seen out of context rely on the viewers sense of imagination. The view of an unfamiliar landscape allows for us to dream and long to see that place, as much today as it did in the late 1800s, relying on imagination to figure out what it is that we are looking at.”
Gallery 101 hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information call the UWRF Art Department at (715) 425-3266.
