Marketing, Investment Experts are Guest Speakers at Business Event

MAY 15, 2009—Dean Junkans, chief investment officer for Wells Fargo, and Mark Lacek, managing partner of Denali Marketing, will be guest speakers at an informal alumni business event at Holiday Inn St. Paul East June 2 hosted by the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 2201 Burns Ave., St. Paul. RSVP is requested by May 28 to Connie Fassino, 715-425-3335, or via email The event includes a cash bar, hors d'oeuvres and presentations.

Lacek was selected as the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus by UWRF, and is a 1979 UWRF graduate. He also holds an M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas. Lacek began his career in strategic planning at Republic Airlines. After the merger of Republic and Northwest Airlines, Lacek became director of marketing for Northwest Airlines and was chosen by Advertising Age magazine as "one of Americas best and brightest in advertising and marketing."

In this capacity, Lacek was responsible for WorldPerks, Northwest Airlines frequent flyer group. In 1993 Lacek co-founded the Lacek Group Worldwide and has been involved in other start-up companies. Lacek is the founder and chairman of Faith's Lodge, and 80-acre retreat for parents who have suffered the loss of a child and parents who have chronically ill children. He is a board member for Growth and Justice and a member of the UWRF CBE advisory board.

Junkans is author of “The Anatomy of Investing” and was the 2005 CBE Executive-in-Residence. Junkans graduated from UWRF in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in economics and went on to earn a master's degree in applied economics from Purdue University. He became a chartered financial analyst in 1990.

Prior to working at Wells Fargo, Junkans was vice president and senior portfolio manager of American National Bank's Trust Investments Group. He has also served as a funds management officer for Farm Credit Services. Junkans joined Wells Fargo in 1994 as a senior portfolio manager and a team member in private client accounts.

In his current position, Junkans oversees investment management process and strategy for private client services. Additionally, Junkans has served on the board of directors for the UWRF Foundation as well as on the investment oversight committee of the Carlson Enterprise Funds at the University of Minnesota.
