Kenosha Students Visit Campus

APRIL 27, 2009--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls recently hosted 26 middle-school students from Lincoln Middle School and Mahone Middle School in Kenosha as a part of an Alternative Spring Break college-readiness program on campus.

Students explored college in "real-time" and experienced what university life has to offer. Workshops especially designed for the students included topics such as advanced courses, college access programs and ACT/SAT testing.

UWRF interim precollege coordinator Anthony Anderson (below), who also is a student at UWRF, coordinated the event.  

"There was a lot of work, time and energy put into this event, and it was a great success mainly because of the support that was given by all who were involved,"

said Anderson. "We are hoping to have this program return next year and many years to follow."

UWRF alumnus Karwee Marshall (pictured, center) led the middle school students in a workshop, "Building a Strong Academic Foundation," as part of the day-long enrichment program designed to give students study, time-management and critical-thinking skills.

The Alternative Spring Break Program is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and is geared toward students from low-income families.
