UWRF Dairy Club Shines with Quiz Bowl First Place

APRIL 20, 2009 | Forty-three University of Wisconsin-River Falls students traveled to Fargo, No, Dak., to participate in the annual Midwest Regional conference of the American Dairy Science Association-Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD), hosted by North Dakota State University.

During the two-day conference, more than 300 students representing more than a dozen Midwestern universities networked with industry leaders, attended educational workshops, and competed in various contests.

Students tested their knowledge of dairy science in two Quiz Bowl contests, including upper and lower divisions.   In the lower division quiz bowl, the UWRF Dairy Club team won first place and was awarded a framed Bonnie Mohr print. In the online Dairy Club Yearbook contest, UWRF took second place.

The lower division quiz bowl team included Alex Gieser, a sophomore dairy science major from Hilbert, Carl Lippert, a sophomore dairy science major from Pittsville, Paul Lippert, a sophomore dairy science major from Pittsville, and Jeff Orr, a freshman dairy science major from Belle Vernon, Pa.

Representing UWRF in the upper division quiz bowl were Michael Johnson, a senior dairy science major from Preston, Minn., Amber Elliott, a senior agricultural marketing communications major from Marshall, Michael Reps, a senior dairy science major from Utica, Minn., and Jeffery Jens, junior dairy science major, from Plymouth.

Junior Dairy Science major Londa Johnson, of La Crescent, Minn., was elected president of the Midwest Regional ADSA-SAD for 2009-10. As president, Johnson will provide leadership in planning and running the 2009-10 Regional ADSA-SAD conference, which will be held at South Dakota State University. Johnson is currently serving as president of the UWRF Dairy Club.

UWRF Dairy Club members were accompanied by club advisor Dennis Cooper, a professor of dairy science. Along the way to the conference, the students toured four dairy farms.
