UWRF Upcoming Colt Sale

April 17, 2009 | For people seeking a well-bred western performance horse to add to their reining, cutting or cow-horse passion, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 33rd Annual Colt Sale is the perfect place to find such an animal.

The sale is Saturday, May 2 at UWRF Lab Farm 1. There will be about 45 horses for sale, available to preview at 11 a.m. with lunch at 12:30 p.m. and the sale beginning at 2 p.m.

UWRF-owned and trained colts along with colts that are privately owned will be sold at the sale, with proceeds from the UWRF horses going directly back to its equine program. The proceeds minus the training fees go back to the owners of the privately owned colts.

All of the colts went through a rigorous training program conducted by students who are enrolled in the equine program at UWRF. The students put in many hours of time and a lot of hard work to get their colt where it is today, says Kris Hiney, assistant professor in the equine program at UWRF. Every year, the number of UWRF-owned colts participating in the program has increased, she said.

“The sale is fun and a good chance for students to showcase what they have done throughout the year,” said Hiney. “It is also a time for alumni and friends of the program to come back and socialize.”

Hiney added, “It is an unforgettable life experience for the participating students, and we appreciate everyone's support.”
