Students Launch United Way Campus Organization
DEC. 8, 2008--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is partnering with United Way St. Croix Valley in the creation of a new student organization on campus.
The new Student United Way will work to better the River Falls and UWRF communities in United Way’s three key focus areas—education, income and health—through volunteer activities with partner agencies, fundraising and advocating for issues important to students.
United Way St. Croix Valley board president and UWRF College of Arts and Sciences Interim Dean Brad Caskey said he is positive about how the student group can benefit both UWRF and the United Way.
“United Way is always looking for ways to tap into the community, and students have specific skills they can bring to help,” he said. “This is also a great way for students to see where the need is in our community and make a difference.”
Executive Director of United Way St. Croix Valley John Coughlin explained that United Ways around the country are looking to expand into other areas aside from the fundraising the organization has focused on in the past. Student
United Way is one of the first major ways the national nonprofit is trying to achieve that vision—the 2008-09 school year marks the second year colleges and universities have adopted the group on their campuses.
“I personally am very excited about the Student United Way effort,” Coughlin said. “I think it will bring some good energy to our United Way and give students a chance to get involved in the issues that matter to them.”
UWRF’s chapter is currently recruiting and participating in volunteer and fundraising activities while waiting to obtain status as an official university organization.
The students have plans to meet regularly starting spring semester. For more information, contact Kate Smith at 651-308-6294 or firstname.lastname@example.org. United Way St. Croix Valley is located in Hudson and serves several counties in northern Wisconsin as well as Pierce and St. Croix counties.
