UWRF Student Receives National Scholarship
NOV. 14, 2008--University of Wisconsin-River Falls senior horticulture major Nathan Lang, of Sister Bay, was chosen by the trustees of the Joseph Shinoda Memorial Scholarship foundation as a National Scholarship recipient for the 2008- 09 year.
According to UWRF professor of horticulture Terry Ferriss, Lang is a student worthy of selection by the organization. "Nathan is a second generation horticulturist who is eager to help carry his family's business into the future," she said. "He has vision and is not afraid to imagine how he can make changes that can address and overcome the challenges facing the greenhouse/floral/garden center industry, including energy."
Since 1965, the Shinoda Foundation has awarded scholarships valued at more than $694,000 to some 600 undergraduate students. Students studying horticulture, floriculture or related fields are eligible. "These students are the future of the horticulture industry, and the foundation is proud to continue its support of this next generation of leaders," says Paul Ecke, III, president of the foundation.
About 10 percent of the scholarships awarded go to the plant and earth science department at UWRF as incentive for the department to encourage students to apply for future scholarships. Information about the scholarships is sent to collegiate horticulture and floriculture departments across the nation, and applications are accepted from January until March 30 each year.
