Murder Mystery Mayhem is Brought To UWRF Stage
OCT. 7, 2008--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls University Theatre welcomes its first show of the year, the murder mystery musical, "Something's Afoot!" opening Oct. 23 and running Oct. 24, 25, 30, 31 and Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Directed by theater professor James Zimmerman, the show brings a cast of 10 to their unfortunate ends.
Originally written in 1971 by James McDonald, Robert Gerlach, and David Vos, the show was revived most recently on Broadway in the 1980s. Loosely based on Agatha Christie's "Twelve Little Indians," the show parodies all things "detective" with wacky deaths and catchy songs. There's only one catch; the butler didn't do it!
"'Something's Afoot' is wonderful little lost gem of a show," says director James Zimmerman. "It is a script that could leave an audience laughing in the aisles even without the music. Add to that clever ensemble numbers, duets and solos, and 'Something's Afoot' becomes the gem it is."
Senior Angle Brelie is Miss Tweed, an amateur detective who leads the cast of houseguests through suspicions and many murders.
"There are so many different personality types here, and we all are looking into our characters in different ways," she says. "As to my character specifically, Miss Tweed is sort of one of those older ladies that would be turning into "the cat lady" if not for her books. She obviously takes them to heart, and thinks just because she has read them all she knows exactly how to go about solving the murder."
