World Food Day Teleconference at UWRF

SEPT. 26, 2008--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls recognizes World Food Day on Oct. 16 in the George R. Field South Fork Suites meeting room by participating in a program, live broadcast and teleconference from Washington, D.C. The program will focus on climate change and world hunger, and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community is welcome to attend.              

World Food Day is celebrated annually in countries around the world. The teleconference, starting at 11 a.m., includes internationally renowned speakers Nancy Birsdall (president of the Center for Global Development), Siwi Msangi (International Food Policy Research Institute), and Mark Ritchie (Secretary of State of Minnesota). Moderator is Ray Suarez, of the PBS "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."               

This year, the live teleconference portion will be followed by a panel discussion from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. by local experts on food and environmental issues. The panel will consist of Kelly Cain, director of the St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development and UWRF professor of environmental sciences; Greta Gaard, UWRF professor of English; Bonnie Walters, UWRF professor of food science; and Jackie Brux, director of the Association for International Development and professor of economics.               

The panel discussion is followed by a video from 2 to 3 p.m. called "Universities Fighting Hunger." The video highlights ways that university faculty and students can take a more active role in fighting hunger. From 3 to 4 p.m., panelists and audience will interact in a brainstorming session to plan strategy for fighting hunger and global warming as well as local involvement.               

"World Food Day has been celebrated at UWRF as long as I can remember," said Brux. "We typically alter the format somewhat each year in order to provide a more meaningful experience for students, faculty, and the local community. This year's program will be excellent."
