Homecoming Festivities Start Sept. 28

SEPT. 26, 2008- Students and alumni are getting ready for the "Fiesta De La Noche" or "Party of the Night"-themed Homecoming Week Sept. 28-Oct. 5 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Homecoming competitions begin on Monday, Sept. 29 with the first medallion hunt clue posted at the University Center information desk at 9 a.m. with a new clue posted daily through Thursday. Monday also includes the official Homecoming kickoff on the University Center Lawn from noon to 4 p.m. The kickoff consists of music, free mechanical bull rides, presentation of the 2008 homecoming court and teams, giant tricycles, snow cones and popcorn. Voting for royalty begins online at 4 p.m. on Monday and runs until 4 p.m. on Friday.    

Other activities that take place throughout the week consist of a food drive competition in front of Riverside Commons in the University Center, Salsa dancing in the Falcon's Nest (UC), a pop tab competition in front of Riverside Commons, bingo in the North Hall Auditorium, and a lip-sync competition hosted by Ryanhood in the North Hall Auditorium.

Homecoming takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4 and begins with the parade at 10:30 a.m. Following the parade is a BBQ at the University Center lawn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The much-anticipated football game begins at 1 p.m. against UW-Stevens Point with coronation of king and queen at half time.

The UWRF Symphony Band and Jazz band will also hold a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Abbott Concert Hall of the Kleinpell Fine Arts Building. Guest soloist is Gary Bird on tuba; he is a UWRF alumnus, retired professor of music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, book author and adjunct professor at St. Cloud State University. Tickets, priced from $2 to $5, will be available at the door.

Saturday also includes many activities for UWRF alumni. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a tent will be set up on the University Center Mall serving as a meeting ground for all UWRF alumni. The new Joanne Belfiori Banks Center For Interdisciplinary Inquiry will have a dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Chalmer Davee Library with a reception to follow.

Reunions are planned for: Alpha Sigma Alpha, College of Business and Economics, College of Education and Professional Studies, Department of Health and Human Performance, Football, 1958 Champion Football Team, Men's Basketball, Men's and Women's Swimming, Phi Mu, Theta Chi, UWRF classes of 1970 through 1979, Vets Club, and Volleyball. Homecoming wraps up on Sunday with the Alumni Homecoming Concert at 3 p.m. in the William Abbott Concert Hall of the Kleinpell Fine Arts building. The program includes musical selections by the UWRF Alumni Choir, UWRF Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Women's Choir, Men's Choir, and combined choirs. Tickets available at the door: $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and $2 for students. A reception will follow the concert.
