Alternative Education Graduate Certificate Approved

MAY 21, 2008--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls recently received approval to offer a graduate certificate in alternative education. Students may either complete the classes for Wisconsin teaching certification or for the newly approved graduate certificate in alternative education.

Students will receive practical and theoretical experience based on a reflective practice model. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction also approves the program for 952 certification.

Dave Berg, a teacher at Ellsworth High School, is currently enrolled in the program and is close to completion. He says the program will benefit him greatly with his work in alternative education.

"The UWRF alternative education program has provided me with invaluable knowledge and expertise and has helped focus the efforts to improve and expand our programs here," said Berg. "The knowledge is practical and I put it to use every school day."

The program features all online classes that may be taken in any sequence. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with fellow educators from all over the country and may complete each two-credit class in approximately six weeks.

"I found the classes and assignments to be rigorous and challenging. The flexibility of the online feature was very helpful," said Berg.

Berg said it has been beneficial learning from an expert in the field of alternative education. Carole Mottaz, an adjunct professor at UWRF and coordinator of the Renaissance Academy in River Falls, designed and currently teaches all the classes.

"Her knowledge and expertise has been invaluable. She has made me think about and reevaluate the programs I am involved in. Her passion for providing a meaningful opportunity to learn for every student is contagious," Berg said.
