Award-Winning Author Visits UWRF

MARCH 21, 2008--Award-winning author Mary Relindes Ellis will be the UW-River Falls Writer-in-Residence on campus April 9-10 with a public reading at 4 p.m. April 10 in the Chalmer Davee Library.

Ellis will begin her visit with in English Professor Jenny Brantley's evening Writing Seminar class on April 9 and discuss the writing process with students.

On April 10, the English department and Paper Cuts is hosting a brown-bag lunch, in the Dean's Conference Room, Room 140, Kleinpell Fine Arts building, followed by a public reading from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Library Breezeway, second floor.  

Ellis, a native of Glidden, Wisconsin, Ellis is most widely known for her novel "The Turtle Warrior" (Penguin Books, 2005). Set in Olina, Wis., the novel explores the echoes of war on family and the safe haven that neighbors provide two boys affected throughout their lifetime by their father's alcoholism. The book won the 2005 Banta Award for Literary Achievement from the Wisconsin Library Association, was a 2005 Great Lakes Book Awards finalist, and was an Amazon.com 25 Fiction Picks of 2004 Booksense Pick.

Her fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train magazine, The Wisconsin Academy Review , The Bellingham Review and in several anthologies including "Bless Me Father: Stories of a Catholic Childhood" and "Uncommon Waters: Women Write About Fishing."

Ellis teaching fiction writing in Iowa City and is a graduate student in the Iowa Writers' Program.
