This year's concert will consist of a unique blend of faculty, guest, and student choreography and will offer a wide variety of styles ranging from lyrical, classical Chinese, and contemporary modern dances. The concert will feature the work of Bryan Gerber, artistic director of Aurora Dance Company of St. Paul. Gerber has created an original piece, "The Grief of Humanity," for seven members of Dance Theatre. The piece explores the issue of conformity. Gerber, with UWRF faculty member Mari Kline, has also co-choreographed and will perform a compelling duet, which explores human contact. The concert also will feature student-based work including a powerful solo by Allison Davitt, a sophomore pre-professional major from St. Paul, titled, "Veiled," danced to a musical score by River Falls musician Phyllis Goldin. Student choreographer Brittany Warren, a senior from Crystal, Minn., has choreographed a mixed media dance, combining film, dance, and an original musical score. Student Rana Kuebker, a sophomore marketing communications major from Hammond, will perform a solo portraying balance and imbalance to music by Sigur Rós. UWRF faculty members Karla Zhe, Susan Sell, Torrion Amie and Kline have choreographed diverse pieces including Sell's innovative improvisational-based lyrical for 13 dancers. Kline has created two technically challenging modern pieces, one of which will represent UWRF at the American College Dance Festival at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Amie's "Pulse," is a high energy hip-hop piece for nine dancers, while Dance Theatre alumnus Ricardo Suarez's lighthearted dance takes a humorous look at "A Quiet Day in the Park." Ten Dance Theatre members will perform a beautiful Chinese folk dance with authentic costumes designed by Dance Theatre member Haiya Zhang, a freshman business administration major from Kunming, China. Rounding out the program is a large group piece, choreographed by Karla Zhe, danced by the 32 members of the Dance Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults, and are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 24 through April 5 at the box office in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building and before each evening performance beginning at 6 p.m. For more information contact Dance Theatre at 715-425-3114.
