Professional Communication Is Topic of Luncheon
By Laurel Kolkind
MARCH 7, 2008--The ins and outs of professional communication will be discussed at a lunch workshop offered Thursday, March 27 from 11:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Room 129 of the RDI building at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The workshop is part of the Lunch 'N Learn series, co-sponsored by the UWRF Outreach Office, the River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Chippewa Valley Technical College.
Participants will discuss how to choose the appropriate types of communication and how to develop practical skills and techniques to use in the workplace. The workshop will cover issues relative to written workplace communication with an emphasis on the importance of audience as well as email etiquette and appropriate channels or communication.
Mialisa Moline, an assistant professor in the UWRF English department, will present and lead the workshop, which includes an interactive PowerPoint presentation, activities relative to written workplace communication, and a question-and-answer session.
Moline says that choosing the correct type of communication is crucial in the workplace. " Choosing the right communication channel or combination of channels increases the effectiveness and persuasiveness of a received message," she said.
The workshop is designed for community members, business people, supervisors, employees, students and others interested in improving their communication skills. "It will help them increase their effectiveness in persuading particular audiences ... and analyze the dynamic nature of the audience receiving their messages and improve the application of a thorough analysis of those audiences as they plan their messages," says Moline.
Moline teaches courses in business and technical writing, professional and technical editing and cyber-literacy.
As a joint effort between the UWRF Outreach Office, River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Chippewa Valley Technical College, Lunch 'N Learn is offered twice per year.
The fee for the workshop is $25 for chamber members and students and $30 for non-chamber members. Lunch will be provided and parking is available. Register with the chamber at 715-425-2533 or http://www.rfchamber.com/.
