UWRF Recognized in President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

FEB. 29, 2008--For the second year in a row, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is among the nation's colleges and universities listed on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Chancellor Don Betz was pleased to comment on this honor. "We are pleased to be included on the 2008 President's Community Service Honor Roll," Betz says. "The civic engagement efforts of our students merit this national recognition, and, in this way, we are encouraged to be even more creative and more connected to our communities and region. I applaud the students and their faculty and staff mentors for earning this accolade by addressing one of the key operational goals of the UWRF strategic plan "Living the Promise" to develop engaged leaders."

More 2,500 students participated in community service projects and some 1,500 students contributed more than 20 hours per term.

The Corporation for National and Community Service launched the Honor Roll in 2006. The program responds to President Bush's call to service by supporting the civic mission of our nation's universities and colleges. The Honor Roll's Presidential Award is the highest recognition an institution can receive for its commitment for service-learning and civic engagement.

The Presidential Award has two categories: General Community Service and Special Focus. The General Community Service category is determined by the level of student participation in service activities and the level of effort, innovativeness, scope and effectiveness of exemplary service projects described in the application. The Special Focus category includes the level of service to youth from disadvantaged circumstances that lower school dropout rates.

Selection to the honor roll includes those projects described and deemed to be relevant, meaningful, and exemplary. Institutions must participate in the Federal Work-Study program and meet the statutory minimum FWS community service requirements.
