FEB. 22, 2008--The College of Business and Economics at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has recognized three outstanding faculty members. The college presented Assistant Professor Marina Onken with the Outstanding Research Award; Professor Brian Schultz with the Outstanding Advising Award; and Professor John Walker with the Outstanding Teacher Award.

Outstanding Research Award: Marina Onken, of Hudson, is an assistant professor of management and has been teaching at UWRF since 2006. "This award means a lot to me since the CBE received AACSB accreditation last year," she says. "My colleagues worked very hard to attain accreditation, and research is a part of maintaining accreditation. It's part of our mission to do research and tie it back to the classroom." Onken currently serves on the Technology Council at UWRF and also the CBE Graduate Committee.

Outstanding Advising Award: Brian Schultz, of River Falls, (below, right), is a professor of economics and has been teaching at UWRF since 1979. Schultz has previously been awarded the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 1984 and Business Association Professor of the Year in both 1999 and 2000. Schultz served as the chair for the Department of Economics from 1990 to 1992 and also from 2000 to 2003. "I am honored to receive the 2007 CBE Outstanding Advisor Award," he said. "It's great to know that students think I have helped them achieve their academic goals and made a difference in their lives." Schultz is currently the associate dean for CBE.

Walker was also named Distinguished Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Advisor of the Year for CBE in 2005. Upon receiving the Outstanding Teacher Award Walker said, "It's an honor to receive the Outstanding Teacher Award for CBE. We take teaching very seriously at this institution--my colleagues are all very good teachers. In this context, to have students acknowledge you as an outstanding teacher, is very rewarding." Walker is currently the chair of the CBE Curriculum Committee.

The primary mission of the College of Business and Economics is to meet the needs of its stakeholders with high quality undergraduate programs, a Masters of Management program, and business outreach services to the St. Croix Valley region. Its programs are grounded in the liberal arts tradition and include the application of business and economics knowledge through the integration of the classroom and the community.
