UWRF Students Receive MNLA Scholarships
FEB. 11, 2007--Three students in the horticultural studies program at University of Wisconsin-River Falls recently received scholarships sponsored by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) Foundation. Scholarship recipients are Brandon Lowry from Oakdale, Minn., Amanda Reckner from West Bend, Wis., and Brandi Werstovshek from Loyal, Wis.
"The UW-River Falls Horticulture program feels very fortunate that the MNLA is a regional organization and supports both Minnesota students and Wisconsin students," said Terry Ferris, professor of plant and earth science at UWRF. "It's a great opportunity for both students and co-sponsoring businesses because many of the scholarship winners go on to provide quality labor for MNLA members."
The MNLA scholarship program recognizes superior students enrolled in horticultural, nursery or landscape studies programs at several area colleges and universities. The scholarships are designed by MNLA and its member companies to help grow future leaders in the nursery and landscape industry.
Three MNLA member firms co-sponsored the scholarships for UWRF students. Bailey Nurseries, based in St. Paul, sponsored the scholarship for Lowry. Law's Nursery Inc., based in Hastings, Minn., sponsored the scholarship for Reckner. Linder's Greenhouses Garden Center Flower Marts & Landscaping, based in St. Paul, sponsored the scholarship for Werstovshek.
To be eligible for an MNLA scholarship, applicants must possess a "C" grade average or better, present letters of recommendation from instructors and employers, and submit an essay stating their career goals and objectives.
The Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association is the state's largest green industry trade association with more than 1,500 member companies. Members include nurseries, garden centers, landscape contractors, landscape designers, irrigation contractors, commercial flower growers, tree care specialists, professional gardening services, and turf and landscape management professionals.
