UWRF Participates in International Education Week

NOV. 14, 2007--In conjunction with International Education Week Nov. 12-16, which is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has hosted several international-themed events including a photo contest and display of UWRF student academic and service travels abroad.

The winning photos are displayed until Nov. 16 in the Hagestad Hall Atrium. Winners included: first place, "The Colors of Busan, South Korea," by Amanda DeCesaro, a senior majoring in animal science from Pleasant Prairie, Wis .; second place, "Royal Thoughts," by Nicole Tate, a freshman majoring in animal science from North Branch, Minn .; third place, "El Mirador" by Maranda Simonet, a senior majoring in English from River Falls ; and honorable mentions to Jess Coleman for "untitled" and Kenny Yoo, a senior majoring in journalism from Brookfield, Wis ., for "Protest for Human Rights."

Events during the week celebrating UWRF's global connections included a piano recital by visiting pianist Eunjung Choi, salsa dancing, a presentation on global issues through the University's Community Classroom series, premiere of a documentary film by students who worked with the China Exploration and Research Society over the summer, and a Wyman Series presentation on race issues.

Upcoming events include the photo exhibit, a free public showing of a film on Native American culture on Nov. 15 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Kinnickinnic Theatre of the University Center, and an international food tasting event for students on Nov. 19 in the dining services area of the University Center.

Findings from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs' study of international education, Open Doors 2007, are featured in this week's Chronicle of Higher Education.
