New Student Leadership Program Takes First Steps
By Lisa Stratton
SEPT. 28, 2007--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is reaching for new opportunities for students in an initiative aimed at fostering leadership abilities.
The new program is headed up by UWRF staff member Amy Lloyd. As leadership training coordinator, Lloyd, who is also involved with the campus media board and providing volunteer opportunities for students, serves on the Leadership Development and Service Committee. She is marking her fourth year on campus, having previously worked for Student Support Services and the Academic Success Center.
"Of course, I have a vision for where I want this program to go, but students are going to be the driving initiative. We're going to be doing this as an entire community," says Lloyd. "We need to find out the needs of our students."
In early September, Lloyd contacted faculty and staff, asking them to nominate students a panel of 10 students. The students selected will be invited to meetings to decide if they are interested.
"We're looking for a diverse and committed group," says Lloyd. "These 10 students will help shape and determine the course of this program."
The main component of the program would be a long-term cohort-centered experience in which students could gain academic credit or possibly an academic minor in leadership. Students would build relationships with faculty members, and scholarship or stipend could be used to study abroad.
According to Lloyd, the program would be designed to benefit all students and enhance the university's strategic mission of helping students become ethical, engaged leaders. "It would be great to do a certificate program in leadership, both for clubs and organizations, and for any student," says Lloyd. "It would help students build a leadership portfolio and to think and reflect on leadership."
Lloyd and other leadership staff will continue making site visits to other campuses to observe similar leadership programs this semester.
The program will most likely officially launch next fall. For more information, please contact Amy Lloyd at 715-425-4444.
