SEPT. 28, 2007--Students and alumni alike at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls are gearing up to get their passports stamped at the "Wonders of the World"-themed Homecoming Week on Oct. 8-13.
Team competitions begin on Oct. 8 with the first clue of the annual medallion hunt. Clues will be available to prize-seekers Monday-Thursday at 9 a.m. at the University Center Info Desk. The winner of the hunt will receive $50.
A kick-off party on Oct. 8 will be held on the University Center lawn from 3 to 8 p.m. Activities include an inflatable obstacle course, henna tattoos, caricatures, and live music by Jester's Panic and The Blend. At 5 p.m., a best seat in the house competition will transpire during the party.
Other activities throughout the week include a pop tab competition, an ancient fashion show, change wars, a food drive, "arid architecture," Yell Like Hell, and a one-hit wonders version of the popular Lip Sync show. Topping off the week's events is a foam party complete with DJ and free pizza at Knowles Arena from 9 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 12.
Those participating in the Homecoming Parade will be up with the sun as line-up starts at 8 a.m. on Oct. 13. The parade, which winds through downtown River Falls, begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the University Center lawn.
A battle of epic and historical proportions is set for Oct. 13 when the UWRF football team confronts the rival UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. The game will take place at 1 p.m. at the Ramer Field Sports Complex. Admission is free for UWRF students with ID; adult tickets are $7, and those aged 5-18 and over 60 are $3. Coronation of this year's Homecoming king and queen will happen at half-time.
Some alumni have yet to view what some call "the eighth wonder of campus"-a.k.a. the new University Center. Tours of buildings with former classmates start from Alumni Welcome Center on the University Center lawn at 9:30 a.m. and continue to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 13. An alumni open house and tour of the new Dairy Learning Center at the Mann Valley Lab Farm is from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 13.
Alumni of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Falcon Football, the health and human performance department, Phi Mu, the Vets Club, the Technology Leadership Cadre, Theta Chi, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, and the classes of 1977-83 are all planning reunion or alumni open house events to be held during Homecoming. For more information, please call the Office of University Advancement toll-free at 877-258-6647.
Two concerts are set during Homecoming Weekend: the Symphony Band and Jazz Ensemble Concert on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., and the Alumni Concert on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. Both musical events will be held at Abbott Concert Hall in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building. Tickets are available at the door and are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and $2 for students. Following Sunday's alumni concert, the choir room will be dedicated in honor of Elliot Wold, longtime choral director at UWRF and music professor emeritus who has led alumni choir tours across Europe for many decades.
