Community Classroom Explores Ethanol Production
SEPT. 6, 2007--Corn ethanol has received a tremendous amount of public attention as a replacement for petroleum gasoline, and the fuel heralded as a possible panacea to oil's future is the first topic in the free Community Classroom lecture series offered by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sept. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the lower level of the River Falls Public Library.
University of Wisconsin-River Falls biology Professor Brad Mogen will present "The Science, Economics (and Myth?) of Corn Ethanol." Mogen will discuss the wide-scale production of ethanol and the resources--both monetary and physical--required to make corn ethanol a reality as well as the the national and global impacts of diverting corn from its traditional role as a food commodity toward ethanol production and what other energy alternatives might be considered.
The Community Classroom series is sponsored by the UWRF College of Arts and Sciences and the Outreach and Graduate Studies Office and features UWRF faculty, staff and students who lead explorations on topics that are of vital concern to our contemporary world.
Events are informal, free, and open to the public. Registration is not required to attend, and sessions are typically once per month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the River Falls Public Library on Division and Union streets in River Falls. Upcoming events in the series include:
