Gallery 101 Fall Exhibit Line-up
SEPT. 6, 2007--Gallery 101 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has several intriguing shows lined up for fall semester to delight the eye and spark a creative spirit.
First up is an exhibition of traditional Guatemalan textiles from Sept. 5 to 24. The more than 60 colorful, hand-woven items displayed are on loan from the private collections of seven local artists. The exhibit contains a veritable closet of clothing: blouses, skirts, pants, head coverings and hair ornaments. All of the pieces were made in the "traje" or traditional Mayan dress style of several highland villages, each of which have their own identifying patterns, colors, and weaving structure. An opening reception for the exhibit is Sept. 12 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the gallery.
The Wisconsin Art Education Association is holding its Juried Members Exhibition at the gallery Oct. 2-26. Anastasia Shartin of The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wis., is guest curator and juried the works of many of Wisconsin's art educators to be displayed. One section in the exhibit represents the theme, "Creating Connections," in conjunction with the upcoming WAEA Conference, which will be held at UW-River Falls Oct. 25-26. Merit and recognition awards for the show will be selected by Shartin and Bill Ammerman, UWRF art professor emeritus and presented on Oct. 25 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Gallery 101.
On Oct. 3, the highly anticipated 16th Annual Outdoor Art Installations will be available for viewing at dozens of sites around the campus grounds. Both students and faculty have the opportunity to create temporary yet striking pieces of art for passersby to view and ponder. Site maps identifying individual installations are offered at Gallery 101 and the Art Department office beginning at 9 a.m. on Oct. 3.
The works of senior art students will be shown at the gallery at two separate exhibitions during fall semester. The first exhibit is scheduled for Oct. 30 - Nov. 6, and the second show is Nov. 9-16.
Gallery 101 art exhibitions of 2007 will wrap up Nov. 28 - Dec. 12 with the annual holiday season Scholarship Sale. Students participating in art classes at UWRF, as well as alumni and faculty, display some of their best work up for purchase. Visitors will be able to view and purchase art in various media, including glass, ceramics, jewelry, fibers, paintings, prints, photography and mixed media. Artists keep a percentage of the price of their works, and a portion of the proceeds goes to a scholarship fund for UWRF art students.
Gallery 101, on the first floor of the Kleinpell Fine Arts Building, is coordinated by the UWRF Art Department. Exhibit hours Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., as well as 2-4 p.m. on Sundays. For more information contact the Art Department at 715-425-3266.
