Power Shutdown to Affect Campus May 13
MAY 4, 2007--UW-River Falls will experience a power shutdown on May 13 as the City of River Falls replaces transformers that serve the campus.
The swap-out is intended to replace two temporary transformers that were installed following a major transformer failure last August.
According to UWRF officials, power will be shut down at 8 a.m. to the main campus to the north of the South Fork of the Kinnickinnic River. Power will be out for about eight hours.
The campus will begin shutting down all information technology services beginning at 6 a.m. on May 13 in anticipation of the power outage. All IT services should be restored by noon on Monday, May 14.
Most campus phone systems also will be disabled during the power outage.
Not all sections of UWRF will lose power. Laboratory Farms No. 1 & 2, the Robert P. Knowles Physical Education and Recreation Center, Hunt Arena, and the CHILD Center are on separate power circuits. However, they will not have access to IT services.
More information about the outage is available at the UWRF Emergency Preparedness web site at http://www.uwrf.edu/emergency/ .
Although IT services will be off-line, the University's campus emergency planning team has arranged for the UWRF web site to be remotely hosted for emergency communications. Those who visit the normal UWRF site, www.uwrf.edu , will automatically reach the emergency communications web site.
University officials noted that although the outage will occur on Mother's Day, a campus emergency communications center will be fully staffed throughout the outage to monitor the changeover and to test the institution's communication and response networks.
