AmeriCorps* Vista Volunteers Host Rally on Campus
APRIL 30, 2007--A bus full of AmeriCorps* staff from across Wisconsin traversed the state last week and made a stop at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls April 26 to in an effort to rally students of all ages to get involved in their communities. More than 100 students from six area schools and representatives from 13 area nonprofit agencies attended a mini-conference on community service at the University Center. Activities included a share fair, multi-media presentations on service-learning projects, and a documentary film booth where students shared their ideas on civic engagement. Speakers include Mila Holcombe of the Special Olympics and youth from New Richmond (Wis.) High School. Called R.I.S.E. Up Wisconsin, the group left UW-Parkside in Kenosha on April 22, and made five more stops during the week's drive across the state. The event was sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Serve Wisconsin, Wisconsin Campus Compact, Special Olympics, State Farm, the Waisman Center and UW-Extension.
