New Program Offers Summer Youth Camp Opportunities
By Samantha Wenwoi
The Discover U program provides its participants with the chance to explore fun and fascinating topics in a university environment. Classes, which are taught by university faculty and other specially selected instructors, are designed to ignite imagination, expand perspectives and provide a fun, hands-on environment for learning. Program dates are July 16-19 and July 23-26.
The College for Kids and Teen University programs were joined for efficiency, said Cynthia Wells-O'Malley, noncredit youth and adult program manager at UWRF.
"Combining the programs offers flexibility for families and students," said Wells-O'Malley. "The previous programs were set so teens had to attend all-day classes and elementary students could only attend morning programs. Instead of running the programs on separate weeks, we will now offer them at the same time."
Another notable difference is the adoption of an open-enrollment policy. In the past, College for Kids and Teen University participants had to be referred by a school counselor or teacher, she said.
Discover U offers both half- and full-day options, and gives students Fridays off. With class subject matter ranging from slam poetry to biotechnology, the program has something for most students' interests.
Tuition for each class is $105, which covers all materials and supplies. Pre-college tuition scholarships are available from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for students currently receiving free or reduced lunches.
Wells-O'Malley hopes that the Discover U program will be worthwhile for its participants. "I hope that they enjoy their experience and that they will return next year," she said.
