Career Events Gives Directions to SuccessBy Lisa Stratton MARCH 23, 2007--Students at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls anxious about their career paths with graduation almost upon them can heave a sigh of relief--help has arrived. The UWRF Career Services and Office of University Advancement are sponsoring the annual career fair, "Career Roadmap: Navigating the World of Work" on March 29. Activities run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Riverview Ballroom and elsewhere in the University Center. The Career Roadmap experience gives students, faculty and staff the opportunity to take part in mock interviews and network with company representatives. Interviewers this year are from companies including M&I Bank, Target, Genex, Thrivent Financial, Enterprise, Aerotech, the YMCA, Agriliance, Baldwin Medical, Wells Fargo, Bally's Total Fitness, Positive Alternatives, First National Bank and Paychex. Various presentations will also be held throughout the day. At 9:30 a.m., nationally renowned career experts Peter Vogt and Terese Corey-Blanck, co-authors of "The College-to-Career Road Map" will impart their knowledge to students during a presentation titled "Succeeding In Your First Job." The seminar will take place in the St. Croix River Room. A panel of University alumni will also be on hand at 10:30 a.m. in the Kinnickinnic River Theater to talk about their experiences in the career world and graduate school. In addition, at 1 p.m. in the Kinnickinnic River Theater, a group of human resource managers from major companies such as Bally's Total Fitness, Agriliance, Cintas, Wipfli, Bauer Built and Target will convene to let students know what prospective employers look for when hiring and share tips on job searching. Attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of both panel discussions. "Hearing the perspectives of current hiring managers and from recent alumni is extremely valuable for these students," says McKenna Schumacher, a career counselor at Career Services. "It gives them a whole new outlook that will help them to better prepare for their upcoming job or grad school searches so that they can be successful." At 2:30 p.m. in the St. Croix River Room, Ryan Reed from MonsterTrak will enlighten students on managing their finances wisely in 'Ultimate Money Skills'. Other options at Career Roadmap include a networking luncheon, consultations on proper business attire, and the chance to sign up for the Hire-a-Falcon job search system. Pictures with Freddy the Falcon will also be available. Résumé, cover letter, and portfolio help tables are available before the event March 26 - 28 from 1-2 p.m. in the University Center.
