Coffee Discussion Explores Fair TradeMARCH 23, 2007--In addition to the trials of just ordering a cup of java--decisions of foam or whip, skim or whole, one shot or three, decaf or high-octane, here or to go--coffee is getting a little more complicated. The UW-River Falls College of Business and Economics invites the campus and community to a free showing of "Black Gold," a documentary exposing the inequalities of the coffee trade, on Wednesday, March 28 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the University Center Kinnickinnic River Theater. An open forum will follow, and information on how to support and participate in fair trade will be provided. The coffee industry is worth more than $80 billion, making it the most traded commodity in the world second only to oil. The documentary follows the coffee trail with fair trade seeker and activist Tedesse Meskela to the nations that supply many distributors. The documentary details Meskela's journey into the unfairness of the ruling market that forces many coffee bean farmers into either bankruptcy or the more lucrative cultivation of narcotics. The inherent inequality in some government institutions designed to protect trade is also portrayed. For more information about the film go to www.blackgoldmovie.com.
