Dance Theatre Holds Spring Concert

MARCH 10, 2006--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dance Theatre will present its annual spring concert on March 28-April 1 at the Blanche Davis Theatre of the Kleinpell Fine Arts Building. All performances will take place at 8 p.m. Ticket prices for adults are $7, and $5 for students, seniors, and children. Students will receive a discounted ticket price of $4 on the March 28 show.

A wide variety of dances will be performed including lyrical, ethnic, and contemporary modern styles choreographed by faculty, guest choreographers and students. Students Ruby Lanoux, a senior math major from Oakdale, Minn., Sara Mickens, a sophomore art major from St. Paul, and Penny Reinhold, a sophomore music major from Knapp, Wis., choreographed several of the pieces being presented.

Faculty members Karla Zhe, Susan Sell, Torrion Amie and Mari Kline also choreographed various dances. Guest choreographers include Dance Theatre alumni Cary Bittinger and Ricardo Suarez and Todd Bierbrauer.

Several of the pieces will include traditional Hawaiian chants as well sacred and modern Hula dances. Having returned from a recent trip to Hawaii to study with Kumu Hula Rich Pedrina of the Halau Hula ‘O Napunaheleonapua on Oha’u, Dance Theatre students have been also been studying the Hawaiian language, arts and culture for the past few years to gain a deeper understanding of the Hula. They have also studied with Bierbrauer, who is owner of Halau Hula ‘Ka Hoku ‘Akau (Hula School of the North Star) in Minneapolis. Beirbrauer is a haumana/student of Pedrina and is currently in the Uniki/graduate program through Kumu Pedrina.

The concert will conclude with a ensemble piece including 34 dancers and choreographed by Zhe.

Tickets will be available at the box office located in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building from March 20 to 31. The box office ise open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, and tickets will also be available before each performance beginning at 6 p.m. For ticket information, call the box office at 715-425-3114 and for concert information call 715-425-3131.
