ART AUCTION RAISES $2,700 FOR KATRINA RELIEF
By Kelli Hoff
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls has made many efforts to help Hurricane Katrina victims, and one of those efforts was the UW-RF art department's sponsorship of a silent art auction held on Oct. 26 and 27. The auction raised more than $2,700, which will go directly toward the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Effort.
Interested buyers placed their bids on artwork donated by alumni, faculty, former visiting artists and emeriti.
"So many faculty and alumni were anxious to show their support," said Michael Padgett, chairperson of the art department and who also was a contributing artist to the auction. "We were doing the best we felt we could do, using our creativity to help victims of this tragedy. It was like giving a little bit of yourself to help out."
In all, more than 50 people bid on artwork donated by more than 40 different artists. Morgan Clifford and Bernice Ficek-Swenson, of the UW-RF art department, co-coordinated the event.
