NOV. 18, 2005-- Nearly $1,100 was raised for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the annual “Turkey Trot” walk and run sponsored by the department of health and human performance at UW-River Falls in November.
Nearly 160 people participated, including students, faculty and community members, who either ran in a 5K race or walked a mile. Students enrolled in a fitness and recreation management course coordinated the event.
Both word of mouth and nice weather were contributing factors in a record turnout for the seventh annual Turkey Trot. In past years the number of participants was around 120 runners and walkers.
Local businesses helped to sponsor the event with cash donations and raffle prizes. The overall men’s and women’s winners also were presented with turkeys.
"The course was good and the event was well-organized," said participant Willy Miller.
“The course was great, and the students did a marvelous job of organizing the event. It was one of the best events I ever participated in,” said Mark Kinders, UW-RF University Communications director, and a veteran of many races and marathons.
First place winner Matt Olson, who ran the 5K in a time of 16:27, applauded the course, which wound from Ramer Field along the South Fork, past the residence halls, and finished at Hunt Arena. “It was good. It felt smooth all the way,” Olson said.
The event was sponsored by Donna’s Hair Fashions, Freeman’s Pharmacy, Mainstreeter Bar & Grill, Pizza Man, Sunrise Tanning, Johnnie’s Bar, UW-RF Student Voice, Premium Waters, Hair by Stewart’s, Kansas City Chiefs, Pizza Hut and Bud’s Lanes.
