HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS MUSICAL EVENTS

NOV. 4, 2005--The season is in full swing at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with an array of holiday music. Most concerts are performed at the William Abbott Concert Hall in Kleinpell Fine Arts Building on campus and are open to the public with tickets available at the door unless otherwise noted.

A highlight of the season is when the UW-River Falls Jazz Ensemble I performs the "The Swinging Nutcracker," featuring director and UW-RF faculty member David Milne, with the Minnesota Orchestra on Nov. 30, and Dec. 1, 2, and 4 at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

The performance features selections from the Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" suite, arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The Minnesota Orchestra is conducted by Kenneth Freed, and ballet and dance are performed by the Minnesota Dance Theater and Ten Foot Five Productions.

Performances are at 10 and 11:35 a.m. on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2. Special afternoon matinees for families are Dec. 4 at 2 and 4 p.m. Ticket prices range from $35 to $19 for adults and $12 to $24 for children; for information and tickets visit www.minnesotaorchestra.org or call its box office at 1-800-292-4141. Group sales of 10 or more save up to 20 percent.

A holiday concert featuring the UW-RF Choral Ensembles, directed by music faculty J.W. Parks, Sarah Parks and David Scholz, with the St. Croix Valley Community Orchestra, directed by Craig Hara, is at 3 and 8 p.m. Dec. 4 and 8 p.m. Dec. 5 in the William Abbott Concert Hall. Tickets at the door are $5 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students, 5 and under free.

A concert by the New Music Ensemble, directed by music faculty Patti Cudd, is at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6 in the William Abbott Concert Hall. Admission is free.

A Percussion Ensemble concert, directed by music faculty Patti Cudd, is at 8 p.m. on Dec. 8 in the William Abbott Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Directed by music faculty Rick Gaynor, a Holiday Brass Concert is Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. in the William Abbott Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The UW-RF Guitar and Woodwind ensembles present a joint concert on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. in the William Abbott Concert Hall. The concert is directed by music faculty Joseph Hagedorn and David Milne. Admission is free.

A student convocation recital by UW-RF music students is planned for 3 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the William Abbott Concert Hall. Admission is free.  

On Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. the Symphonic Wind Band will present a concert in the William Abbott Concert Hall, directed by music faculty member Craig Hara. Admission at the door is $5 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students, 5 and under free.

On Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at Brandy's in the Hagestad Student Center is the "The Final Exam Jam," featuring the UW-RF Jazz Ensembles I and II directed by David Milne. Admission is free.
