MEETING DATES SET FOR MADISON LOBBYING EVENT

OCT. 28, 2005--The economic development corporations from Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties will conduct three open house meetings to identify relevant issues for a lobbying event in Madison in early 2006.

The meetings are set for Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the New Richmond Civic Center, 156 East First Street (New Richmond); Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Polk County Government Center, 100 Polk County Plaza (Balsam Lake); and Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Pierce County Office Building, 412 West Kinne St. (Ellsworth).

Business leaders and area residents are invited to participate in the open houses. Legislative ideas collected at the meetings will be pared down to four or five issues that will be presented to legislators in Madison in February or March 2006.

In early October, representatives from the three EDCs met to begin planning a lobbying event in Madison. The three-county event, tentatively called the St. Croix Valley Legislative Days, is modeled after similar lobbying initiatives across the state such as Superior Days (Northwest Wisconsin), the Valley Rally (Chippewa Valley), and Oktoberfest in the Capitol (La Crosse area).

"The border county region of Polk, St. Croix and Pierce is one of the fastest growing in state," stated Dan Reeves, president of the Polk County EDC. Pamela Brion, president of St. Croix EDC says, "This growth creates many issues that need to be conveyed to a wide audience of legislators."

The joint effort is intended to maximize efficiency. "We can choose to travel to Madison separately, but it is far more effective to work together under one banner," said Trudy Popenhagen, president of the Pierce County EDC.
