MUSIC STUDENT WINS WMEA AWARD


OCT. 14, 2005--UW-River Falls music education senior Kristopher Kulsrud of Apple Valley, Minn., has been selected for the annual Richard G. Gaarder award to be presented in Madison on October 27 at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association conference.

Kulsrud is active in seven music ensembles, serving as a bass trombonist for the UW-RF Symphony Band, the St. Croix Valley Community Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble and Bone-a Fide, a trombone quartet. In addition he sings in the UW-RF Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and a community choir based in Apple Valley. He also serves on the WMEA Collegiate State Steering Committee, and on campus is involved with the Leadership Center and serves as chair of the Performing Arts Committee.

Hilree Hamilton, campus advisor for the Collegiate Music Educators organization, nominated Kulsrud for the award. Kulsrud is majoring in instrumental music education with a secondary degree in vocal performance.

The Richard G. Gaarder award is given to music education students who display exemplary leadership skills and musical excellence and also serve their campus and communities.  

The award commemorates Gaarder's outstanding service to the WMEA as executive secretary/treasurer and editor of the WMEA publication, Wisconsin School Musician. It also marks his more than 25 years of teaching instrumental and choral music in all levels of public schools.
