Phi Kappa Phi Inductees Named at UW-RF

JULY 29, 2005--Some 35 students and two faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls were inducted into the national honor society Phi Kappa Phi in 2005.

Students and staff were honored at a banquet and induction ceremony during spring semester. Speakers included River Falls chapter President Valerie Malzacher, who is director of the UW-RF Library; political science Professor Tracey Gladstone-Stovell; Associate Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies Mary Manke; English Professor Marshall Toman; Provost Ginny Coombs; and Interim Chancellor Virgil Nylander.

Senior Academic Librarian Michelle Todd McNelly and agricultural economics Professor Nate S. Splett were inducted into the River Falls Chapter of PKP.

Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and encourages superior scholarship in all areas of study. It is the highest academic honor a student can receive at UW-RF.

Each year since the establishment of the UW-RF chapter in 1987, the University invites up to 75 selected juniors and seniors and up to four faculty and staff to become members.

To be eligible, a junior must rank in the top five percent of the class, and a senior must rank in the top 10 percent of the class. The cumulative grade point averages for selected students ranges from 3.4 to 4.0 on a scale of up to 4.0.

Associate Professor of computer science Mary-Alice Muraski serves as the River Falls chapter secretary and agricultural economics Professor Lewis May is chapter treasurer. Each year the campus chapter awards a $500 scholarship to a deserving student inductee.

Nationally, Phi Kappa Phi awards some 60 fellowships of $5,000 each year, as well as 40 scholarships worth $2,000. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, PKP is the oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society.
