MAY 13, 2005--The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences
(CAFES) held its annual awards banquet on April 28. The college named
Kirsten Jagow as top academic senior; Lindsay Starr as outstanding senior;
and Steven K. Carlson as outstanding teacher.
Jagow, from Eau Claire, was awarded the Rochelle Junkman Seymour Award
for top senior academic honors. The award goes to the graduating senior
with the highest grade point average within the college.
Jagow is completing a B.S. in animal science and has been accepted into
veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Starr, a graduating marketing communications major from Manawa, was awarded
the Dr. Hildebrand Memorial Award as outstanding CAFES senior.
During her four years at UW-RF, Starr has been an exemplary student, culminating
in her receipt the 2005 Chancellor's Award for Excellence, the highest
honor bestowed to students at UW-RF for outstanding leadership and service
to the University.
She has served as a floor representative to the Prucha Hall Council, a
CAFES ambassador, a new student orientation leader, a peer advisor at
UW-RF Career Services, and a consumer behavior and marketing communications
tutor for foreign exchanges students. Starr is also currently an active
member of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and president of
the UW-RF Block & Bridle Club. CAFES faculty and alumni recognize
Starr as the senior editor of the Fencepost, an alumni publication for
the college.
Carlson, the 2005 CAFES Outstanding Teacher, joined UW-RF and the plant
and earth science department in 1977.
Since that time, Carlson has been known for his dedication to CAFES students,
the University and agronomy students nationwide. Besides instructing numerous
plant and earth science courses, Carlson also serves as the advisor to
the UW-RF Crops and Soils Club and as the national advisor for students
of agronomy.
He has served as the faculty coordinator for agronomy internships at the
University since 1978 and has served on the University's College Recruitment/Retention
and Public Relations committees.
Scholarships as well as other academic honors were awarded at the banquet.
