Former Congressman to Speak on Social Security
APRIL 8, 2005--Former Minnesota Congressman Tim Penny will talk about
Social Security reform on Thursday, April 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the
Blue Room of Rodli Commons at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Penny is a senior fellow and co-director of the University of Minnesota’s
Humphrey Institute Policy Forum. He served in Congress from 1982 to 1994,
representing southeastern Minnesota’s First Congressional District.
While in Congress, Penny founded and co-chaired the Democratic Budget
Group and drafted deficit-cutting initiatives. He continues to work in
the areas of federal budgeting, agricultural policy, trade issues and
rural development.
In 1998-99, Penny served as a member of Gov. Jesse Ventura’s transition
team. In 2001, he was appointed to President George W. Bush's bipartisan
commission on Social Security.
In addition, Penny is a board member and policy chair for a budget watchdog
group, the Concord Coalition, and is an advisory board member for the
Minnesota Compact, a project advocating "clean" campaigns. Penny
is the co-author of two books, "Common Cents" (1995) and "The
15 Biggest Lies in Politics" (1998). He is regular public speaker,
radio commentator and editorial writer. In 2002 Penny was the Independence
Party candidate for governor.
