Academic Staff Council Minutes
September 18, 2002
Call to order at 3:02 p.m.
Members present: Emily Ronning, Sue Walton, Kathy Olsen, Larry
Testa, Steven Luebke, and Michael Stifter. Guests present:
Tony Bredahl.
Chair’s Report
-
A different tone is being set with the new Regent Chair.
-
President Lyall will present info supporting the economic impact of the
UW System on the State.
-
Collaboration efforts are underway between institutions.
-
An art display featuring system faculty is on display in Madison.
UWRF has several pieces on display.
-
UWRF was recently ranked #11 of public institutions in the Midwest in a
recent US News and World Report article.
-
Please share budget “pain” stories as they impact our students, faculty/staff,
and programs. Especially share them if they have a Wisconsin specific
angle.
-
Enrollment is down 76 students from last year.
-
1100 new freshman, sophomores are down, junior even, and seniors are up.
Fifty-five percent of our students are from Wisconsin; sixty-one percent
of our students are female.

Balanced calendar has passed.
-
There will now be a $5000 compensation for the ASC chair.
-
There is currently a $2.8 billion deficit being reported for the state.
Gubernatorial candidates have been invited to campus. Kitty Rhoades
is slated to visit. Legislative debates are to occur at the high
school.
Representatives Report (Tony Bredahl reporting):
New Business

Elections will shape the status of the budget. An elected Democrat
could impact the current makeup of the Board of Regents dramatically.

Chancellor’s lunches were divvied up amongst the group.

Mike will take minutes in Sarah’s absence this Spring.

There is an attempt to update the Academic Staff list maintained by the
University. Main frame switch may impact this.
