Unit 8 - Forest Measurement

Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Explain the basic differences between the "metes and bounds" and the "rectangular" system for surveying land.
2. Provide the basic legal description for a given "fourty" within a rectangular survey system.
3. Define the common units of distance, area, and volume used in forestry, and do calculations of distance, area, and volume using these units.
4. Associate different forest measurement related tools with the information they provide, along with being able to give a general explanation of how they are used to generate that information.
5. Explain the general nature and intent of timber cruising/forest sampling, along with providing a simple example of how a cruise/sampling might be conducted.
