Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Define silviculture, and explain basic connections between forest ecology/ecosystem concepts and silvicultural techniques.
2. Differentiate between artificial and natural regeneration alternatives with regards to application and results.
3. List and discuss an array of silvicultural techniques used to improve immature forest stands, along with stating the desired result(s) from their use.
4. Explain the basic harvesting cuttings/silvicultural systems used in forest management, along with expressing the different outcomes and reasons behind selecting a particular cutting/system when managing a particular forest site.

Unit Concepts and Associated Resources:

Concepts:

I. The basic nature of forest silviculture
II. Regeneration and afforestation
III. Intermediate cuttings/timber stand improvement (TSI)
IV. Harvet cuttings/silviculture
