UW-Stevens Point Earns NCAA Div. III Playoff Berth

UW-Stevens Point, winners of the NCHA regular season and playoff championships, earned a spot in the NCAA Div. III National Championships for the second straight season.

UWSP, 22-2-1 overall,will host Gustavus Adolphus (23-3-1) on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Willett Arena. This is the first time the Pointers have hosted a women's NCAA playoff game.

In 2004 UWSP finished as runner-up in the NCAA tournament. The Pointers lost in the finals to Middlebury, 2-1.

UWSP and Gustavus Adolphus have played twice this year with Gustavus taking a 6-4 win on Jan. 9 in a game played at a neutral site, and UWSP taking a 5-1 win at home on Jan. 30. UWSP has a 12 game unbeaten streak since the loss on Jan. 9.

The two teams played in the 2004 NCAA quarterfinals with UWSP earning a 3-2 double overtime win at Gustavus.

In other quarterfinal games, Manhattanville (22-3-2) plays at Middlebury (23-3-1) and Bowdoin (20-4-1) is at Plattsburgh (20-5-1). The three winners will play in the Frozen Four which will be hosted by Elmira (23-3). on March 18-19. The UWSP-GAC winner will play the Manhattanville-Middlebury winner and the Bowdoin-Plattsburgh winner will play Elmira in the semifinals on March 18.
