UWSP Plays Manhattanville in NCAA Semifinals

UW-Stevens Point will play Manhattanville, N.Y., on Friday in the NCAA Div. III semifinals. The semifinals and finals will be played at Middlebury, Vt., College.

The Pointers, 18-6-4 overall, advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 double overtime win over Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. It is the first appearance in the smifinals for UWSP. Manhattanville is the nation's top ranked team going into the semifinals.

UWSP won the NCHA playoff championship, 2-1, also in two overtimes on Feb. 29 in Superior. Stevens Point has now played five straight one-goal games, winning four of the five. The Pointers have played 13 games decided by one goal or less and are 6-3-4 in those games.

Middlebury advanced to the semifinals after defeating two-time NCAA defending champion Elmira, N.Y., 2-1. They will play SUNY-Plattsburgh in the other semifinal. Plattsburgh beat Bowdoin, 2-1, to advance.

UWSP and Manhattanville will face off at 3 p.m. followed by the Middlebury-Plattsburgh game at 6:30 p.m. (All times are Central.)

Host Middlebury and Plattsburgh meet in the other semifinal. The Pointers have never faced Manhattanville, but tied Plattsburgh, 1-1, and lost to Middlebury, 3-2, earlier this season, while already playing three games in Middlebury's rink.
