Falcon forward Derek Hansberry (Jr., Arvada, Col.) has been named to the 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic third College Division Men's At-Large team.

In May he was named to the first All-District V team.

Hansberry, 6-0, 195 pounds, led the Falcons with 21 goals and was second on the team in points with 35. He led the team with nine power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Hansberry has 39 career goals and 68 career points. He had 10 multiple point games and he has had 20 career multiple point games. He scored two goals and five points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. Hansberry was twice named the team's Player of the Week. He was third on the team in power-play points (9-5-14). The Falcons were 12-1-1 when he scored a goal.

Earlier this year Hansberry was named to the first All-NCHA and All-WIAC teams. He was also named to the second RBK Hockey Div. III West All-America team and the second USCHO.com D-III West All-America squad. In 2006 he was named to the D-III USCHO All-Rookie team after being voted the team's Most Valuable Player.

Hansberry has a 3.91 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in business administration with a management emphasis. This year he was named to the NCHA All-Academic team and earned a Sigma Beta Delta honors program award. He has been named to UWRF Dean's List in all three semesters of attendance.

Hansberry is the ninth Falcon student-athlete to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Brian Izdepski (1995, football first team); Mike Olson (1991, football first team); Bob Kotecki (1986, men's basketball honorable mention); Brian Keller (1986, wrestling (at large) honorable mention); Rob Novak (2004, hockey (at large) second team) and Melissa Tvrdik (2004, volleyball third team), Garrett Duncanson (2006, men's track & field/cross country second team) and Jovin Kroll (2006, football, first team) have also earned the honor.

The Falcons finished 21-6-2 overall in 2007 and won the NCHA regular season championship. The Falcons qualified for the NCAA Div. III playoffs.

The at-large team includes the sports of golf, ice hockey, rifle, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

The Academic All-America program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the programs inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Hansberry Named to CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V At-Large Team

He scored two goals and five points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. Hansberry was twice named the team's Player of the Week. He was third on the team in power-play points (9-5-14). The Falcons were 12-1-1 when he scored a goal.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino (Jr., Bow, N.H.), defenseman Jim Henkemeyer (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) and forwards TJ Dahl (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Derek Hansberry (So., Arvada, Col.) have all been named to 2007 USCHO.com D-III West All-America teams.

Bucchino, Henkemeyer and Dahl were all named to the first West team and Hansberry was named to the second West team.

Earlier this year all four players were named to the first All-NCHA team and to AHCA-RBK All-America teams. Dahl was named the NCHA's Player of the Year.

Bucchino played in all 29 games for the Falcons and finished with a 21-6-2 record. He had a 2.12 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. He recorded one shutout. Bucchino was named the NCHA's Player of the Week three times during the season. In 47 career games he has a 31-11-5 record with a 2.10 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. He has three career shutouts. He made a season-high 43 saves in a 3-1 win over St. Olaf. He made 24 saves in a 3-0 shutout of Stevens Point. Bucchino also had two assists.

Dahl scored 12 goals and 40 assists for 52 points to lead the Falcons. He scored eight power-play goals and four game-winners. He broke the 100-career point mark during the season and currently has scored 33 goals, 79 assists for 112 career points. Dahl scored at least one point in 26 of the team's 29 games. He twice scored four points in a game - on Dec. 12 in a 10-2 win over St. Mary's (2-2-4) and on Feb. 16 in a 4-1 win over Lake Forest (1-3-4). The Falcons were 10-0 this year when he scored a goal. He had had 18 multiple point games and has had 35 career multiple-point games. He was named the team's Player of the Week twice. He scored 22 power-play points (8-14) which tied him for the team lead.

Third Period Goal Lifts Bethel Over Falcons in NCAA Playoffs

March 7, 2007

Bethel University’s Benoit Duhamel’s goal at 11:48 of the third period was the difference as the Royals took a 2-1 win over the Falcons in a NCAA first round playoff game on Wednesday night at Hunt Arena.

The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period when Joe Adams scored his first goal of the season with a snap shot from 20 feet in front of the BU goal. He was assisted by Cory Baldwin and Jared Sailer. Despite UWRF’s quick start, BU out shot the Falcons, 14-7, in the first period.

It didn’t take the Royals long to tie the game in the second period. Just 30 seconds into the second stanza Bill Menozzi scored his third goal of the year with an assist to Pat Dynan. Ten penalties were called in the period. BU was 0-3, and the Falcons were 0-2, with the man advantage. BU out shot the Falcons again - this time 11-8.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead at 11:48 of the third period when Duhamel scored his eighth goal of the season. He pounced on a rebound off a shot by Jon Kovacs to score from 15 feet out. The Falcons held a 15-13 advantage in shots in the period.

Both teams took eight minor penalties in the game and both teams finished 0-4 on the power play. BU had a 38-30 advantage in shots.

BU goalie Aaron Damjanovich made 29 saves and UWRF goalie AJ Bucchino stopped 36 shots. Damjanovich is now 13-5-1 and Bucchino is 21-6-2.

Bethel, now 17-9-1 overall, will play at St. Norbert on Saturday in a NCAA quarterfinal game. The Falcons end their season with a 21-6-2 record.

Falcons Earn NCAA Tournament At-Large Berth; Host Bethel

March 4 , 2007

The Falcon men’s hockey team earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Div. III national championships and will host Bethel on Wednesday at Hunt Arena. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

St. Norbert is the No. 1 seeded West region team and will host the winner of the River Falls-Bethel game on Saturday. No other West teams were selected. Eastern teams that will compete include Oswego, Norwich, Babson, Manhattenville, Middlebury, Fredonia and Massachusetts-Dartmouth. The Falcons are the only West team to earn an at-large berth. Bethel won the MIAC playoff championship and St. Norbert won the NCHA playoff championship and earned the two conference’s automatic berths.

This is the 11th time the Falcons have earned a berth in the NCAA Div. III national tournament. The Falcons are 22-12 all-time in NCAA play. They won national titles in 1988 and 1994 and finished second in 1993. The team finished third in 1995 and 1996. The 22 NCAA wins is second of all institutions. Only Middlebury (31) has more. UWRF's winning percentage in NCAA games (.667) is also second of all institutions. Only Middlebury (.842) has a better winning percentage in NCAA play.

“When the season started our goal was to get to the NCAA tournament,” said Falcon Coach Steve Freeman. “We are pleased and honored to play in the championships. It shows that our program is one of the elite hockey programs in the country.”

The Falcons beat Bethel, 7-4, on Jan. 6 at Hunt Arena. BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game, but the Falcons scored six third period goals to get the win. Wade Harstad scored two goals in the game and Tyler Kostiuk and TJ Dahl each had two assists.

The Falcons last played in the NCAA tournament in 2004 when they opened with a 2-0 win over St. John’s, but lost in the quarterfinals to St. Norbert, 5-2. Freeman’s teams have a 4-6 record in NCAA play. This is the fifth time that Freeman has led the Falcons to the NCAA tournament. The team’s best finish with Freeman behind the bench is fourth place in 2001. Freeman was an assistant coach when the Falcons won the 1994 title. In NCAA tournament games the Falcons are 11-2 at Hunt Arena, 8-8 on the road and 3-2 at neutral sites.

The Falcons enter the tournament with a 21-5-2 record. They won the NCHA regular season championship, but were eliminated from the NCHA tournament in the semifinals.

The Falcons have one of the most talented lines in college hockey with junior Dahl (12-40-52) sophomore Derek Hansberry (21-14-35) and junior Pat Borgestad (16-13-29). Dahl leads the Falcons in assists and Hansberry leads the team in goals. Hansberry leads the team in power-play goals (9) and game winners (5). Dahl is second in power-play goals (8) and he has four game winners. Borgestad has six power-play goals and three game winners.

Three other Falcons scored 20 or more points; junior defenseman Jim Henkemeyer (8-18-24), senior forward Kostiuk (9-12-21) and sophomore forward Dustin Norman (10-10-20). The Falcons average 3.89 goals a game.

Junior goalie AJ Bucchino has played almost every minute in goal. He enters the tournament with a 21-5-2 record with a 2.12 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. He leads the NCAA Div. III in saves percentage and is seventh in goals against average. The Falcons allow 2.25 goals a game.

Special teams always play a key role in tourney play and the Falcons are among the best in the country in power play and penalty kill. The Falcons are 44-172 on the power play (.256). They have killed off 133-155 penalties (.858). The Falcon power play is ninth in the nation and the penalty kill is 12th.

Bethel, which advanced to the NCAA tournament after beating St. Thomas, 5-3, in the MIAC Finals, is led in scoring by Nick Miller (8-18-26). Three other Royals have scored 20 or more points – Jeff Balvin (7-17-24), Steve Eastman (9-13-22) and Brad Peterson (8-12-20). Goalie Aaron Damjanovich is 12-5-1 with a 2.53 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. This is Bethel's first appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Bethel has converted on 37-147 power plays (.252) and have killed off 110-134 opponent power plays (.821).

The Falcons are 13-3 at Hunt Arena this year while Bethel is 5-6-1 in road games.  UWRF leads in the all-time series between the two teams, 9-4-1. The teams have never met in NCAA play before.

Falcons Lose, 2-1, to St. Scholastica in NCHA Semifinals

Feb. 24, 2007

The Falcon men’s hockey team lost a 2-1 decision to St. Scholastica in the NCHA semifinals played at Hunt Arena Saturday night.

St. Scholastica picked up the only goal of the first period. After UWRF had killed off two penalties, they picked up a third and the Saints took advantage of the man advantage. A.J. Tucker scored the power-play goal from just in front to give his team a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Joey Martini. The goal came just 12 seconds after the penalty was called.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead at 4:51 of the second stanza when Tucker scored his second of the game. He was assisted by Trevor Geiger. The goal, the eventual game winner, came off a rush after the Falcons had applied some pressure in the Saints end.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard at 6:30 of the period when Tyler Kostiuk scored on a penalty shot. He was dragged down 20 feet from the Saints goal. It was his ninth goal of the season. Kostiuk came in from the goalie’s right, fake a move to his forehand and finished the play with a backhand shot that cleanly beat the goalie. It was the first penalty shot for the Falcons since Pat Borgestad scored against St. Mary’s on Jan. 13, 2006.

There was no scoring in the third period – the Falcons out shot the Saints, 11-8. CSS had out shot the Falcons, 9-8 in the first, and 9-7 in the second period.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 24 saves and his record is now 21-5-2. CSS goalie Tyler Johnson stopped 25 shots and he is now 12-8-1.

Both teams were called for five minor penalties. CSS finished 1-5 on the power play and UWRF was 0-5.

CSS advances to the NCHA Finals and will play at either Stout or St. Norbert on Saturday.

The Falcons are now 21-5-2 overall and will wait to see if they earn an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. The tournament field will be announced on March 4.

Six Named to 2007 All-WIAC Teams

Six members of the Falcon men's hockey team have been named to 2007 All-WIAC teams and Falcon Coach Steve Freeman was named the league's Coach of the Year.

Named to the first team were goalie AJ Bucchino (Jr., Bow, N.H.), forwards TJ Dahl (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Derek Hansberry (So., Arvada, Col.) and defenseman Jim Henkemeyer (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.). Forward Pat Borgestad (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) and defenseman Chris Robinson (So., Brooklyn, N.Y.) both earned honorable mention.

Bucchino, who was named to the 2006 first team, played in all 25 regular season games for the Falcons and finished with a 19-4-2 record. He has a 2.22 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. He recorded one shutout. Bucchino was named the NCHA's Player of the Week three times during the season. In 43 career games he has a 29-9-5 record with a 2.16 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. He has three career shutouts. He made a season-high 43 saves in a 3-1 win over St. Olaf. He made 24 saves in a 3-0 shutout of Stevens Point. Bucchino also has two assists.

Henkemeyer, who earned honorable mention to the 2006 team, scored eight goals and has 22 points. He has scored seven power-play goals and two game-winners. He leads the team in power-play points with 20 (7-13). Henkemeyer has 14 goals and 38 career points. He was named the NCHA Player of the Week on Dec. 4. UWRF has a 4-1 record when he scores a goal. Henkemeyer scored one goal and four points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12.

Dahl, who was named to the 2006 first team and earned honorable mention to the 2005 unit, scored 11 goals and a league-leading 36 assists. He has scored seven power-play goals and four game-winners. He broke the 100-career point mark during the season and currently has scored 32 goals, 75 assists for 107 career points. Dahl has scored at least one point in 24 of the team's 25 regular season games. He scored two goals and two assists in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. The Falcons are 9-0 this year when he scores a goal. He has had 16 multiple point games and has had 34 career multiple point games. He has been named the team's Player of the Week twice. He has 19 power-play points, second on the team.

Hansberry, who was named to the 2006 first team, led the Falcons with 20 goals and is second in the team in points with 33. He led the team with nine power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Hansberry has 37 career goals and 66 career points. He has had nine multiple point games this year and he has had 19 career multiple point games. He scored two goals and five points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. Hansberry has twice been named the team's Player of the Week. He is third on the team in power-play points (9-5-14). The Falcons are 11-1-1 when he scores a goal. He has three multiple point games this year and seven in his career.

Borgestad, who earned honorable mention to the 2006 team, is third on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 26 points. He is second in goals. He has scored five power-play goals and two game-winners. He has had eight multiple point games this year and has had 14 in his career. Borgestad picked up four assists in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12.   The Falcons are 9-3-1 when he scores a goal. He has scored 27 career goals and 53 career points.

Robinson finished the regular season with two goals and four points. He is an outstanding defensive defenseman and played in 24 regular season games. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 4-3 win over Stevens Point on Nov. 18.

Freeman has earned the WIAC Coach of the Year award six teams. He also won the award in 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 1998. Freeman helped lead the Falcons to the team's fourth straight WIAC championship in 2007. He earned his 200 th career win at UWRF when the Falcons beat Lawrence, 6-4, on Oct. 28. Freeman also led the 2007 Falcons to the NCHA regular season championship and a first round NCHA playoff win over Lake Forest.

The Falcons, who finished the regular season with a 19-4-2 record, won the WIAC championship for the fourth straight season with a 7-1 record. It was the University's 13 WIAC hockey championship. UWRF also won the NCHA regular season title with a 10-3-1 record.

Falcons Top Lake Forest, 7-1; Win NCHA Playoff Series

The Falcon men’s hockey team beat Lake Forest, 7-1, and won the NCHA quarterfinal playoff series, two games to none, Saturday night at Hunt Arena.

With the win the Falcons advance to the NCHA semi finals next weekend when they will host the winner of the Superior-St. Scholastica series at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena.

The Falcons put the game away in the first period with three goals. Lake Forest took a minor penalty and 1:29 later Jim Jensen scored from 20 feet out with assists to Tyler Kostiuk and Pat Borgestad. Jensen took a pass from Kostiuk after breaking in from the right point and his shot beat the Lake Forest goalie cleanly. Jensen’s goal came at 6:34 and it was his fourth of the season. The Falcons went ahead, 2-0, at 12:08 when Mitch Kerns scored his sixth goal of the year. Lance Malark hit Kerns with a pin point pass just to the left of the Lake Forest goalie and Kerns one timed the puck in. Lance Malark also assisted. The Falcons went on another power play with just 36 seconds to play in the period and they scored with just two-tenths of a second left. Dustin Norman gathered the puck in at the right point and walked in and beat the goalie cleanly with a wrist shot. Jim Henkemeyer and TJ Dahl assisted on Norman’s ninth goal of the season.

The Falcons added three more second period goals. Tyler Kostick scored his eighth goal of the year at 2:29 with assists to Wade Harstad and Norman. Harstad made a perfect cross ice pass to Kostiuk on the goal. The Falcons went ahead, 4-0, at 6:34 when Malark scored his first goal of the season. Chris Robinson’s shot from the point was left out front and Malark pounced on the loose puck and rammed it home. UWRF added its third power-play goal of the game at 13:02 when Jared Sailer scored his fifth goal of the season. He was assisted by Kostiuk and Harstad. The Falcons out shot the Foresters, 32-3, in the period.

The Falcons scored once in the third at, at 15:05, when Norman scored his second of the game and 10th of the season. He was assisted by Harstad. LFC got on the scoreboard with just 4:15 to play when Mike Kneeland scored.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 15 saves and his record is now 21-4-2. LFC goalie Brandon Kohuch stopped 52 shots. The Falcons had a season-high 59 shots on goal and limited the Foresters to 16. UWRF finished 3-9 on the power play while LFC was 0-4. The Falcons were called for six minor penalties and LFC had 11 minors.

The Falcons enter the NCHA single game semifinal contest with a 21-4-2 overall record.

Dahl's Four Points Help Falcons Top Lake Forest, 4-1

TJ Dahl scored one goal and had three assists to help lead the Falcon men’s hockey team to a 4-1 win over Lake Forest Friday night at Hunt Arena.

With the win the Falcons took a one game to none lead in the NCHA first round playoff series.

The game was tied 1-1 after one period and the Falcons led 3-1 after two.

It took the Foresters just 13 seconds to open the scoring. Tyler Canal was left wide open in front of the Falcon net and he buried a shot to give his team an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons got a power play and Dahl broke in on the Lake Forest goalie’s left and scored at 8:36 to tie the game. It was his 12th goal of the season and he was assisted by Dustin Norman.

The Falcons grabbed a 2-1 lead at 50 seconds of the second period with another power-play goal. Pat Borgestad scored his 15th goal of the season with assists to Jim Henkemeyer and Dahl. UWRF went ahead, 3-1, when Derek Hansberry scored his team-leading 21st goal of the year at 12:04. He was assisted by Dahl and Jim Jensen.

UWRF scored the only goal of the third period at 14:53. Borgestad scored his second goal of the game, and 16th of the season,with assists to Hansberry and Dahl.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 24 saves to raise his record to 20-4-2. LFC goalie Scott Campbell stopped 45 shots.

The Falcons, now 20-4-2 overall, will host Lake Forest again on Saturday in the second game of the series. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Five Named to 2007 NCHA All-Academic Team

Five members of the Falcon men's hockey team have been named to 2007 NCHA All-Academic team.

Forwards Joe Adams (Jr., Roseau, Minn.), TJ Dahl (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.), Derek Hansberry (So., Arvada, Col.) and Devin Underwood (So., Wasilla, Alaska) and defenseman Jason Usher (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) were all recognized for their work in the class room.

Adams, who missed several games early in the season with an injury, played in eight games. He has scored five goals and seven points in his career. He is majoring in elementary education.

Dahl, who was named the NCHA 2007 Player of the Year and to the 2007 and 2006 first teams, led the NCHA in scoring with 47 points. He scored 11 goals and a league-leading 36 assists. He has scored seven power-play goals and four game-winners. He broke the 100-career point mark during the season and currently has scored 32 goals, 75 assists for 107 career points. Dahl has scored at least one point in 24 of the team's 25 regular season games. He scored two goals and two assists in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. The Falcons are 9-0 this year when he scores a goal. He has had 16 multiple point games and has had 34 career multiple point games. He has been named the team's Player of the Week twice. He has 19 power-play points, second on the team. He is majoring in finance.

Hansberry, who was named to the 2007 and 2006 All-NCHA first teams, led the Falcons with 20 goals and is second in the team in points with 33. He led the team with nine power-play goals and five game-winning goals. Hansberry has 37 career goals and 66 career points. He has had nine multiple point games this year and he has had 19 career multiple point games. He scored two goals and five points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. Hansberry has twice been named the team's Player of the Week. He is third on the team in power-play points (9-5-14). The Falcons are 11-1-1 when he scores a goal. He has three multiple point games this year and seven in his career. He is majoring in business administration.

Underwood, who was named to the 2006 NCHA All-Academic team, has played in 12 games and has one assist. He has three career assists. Underwood is majoring in physics and math.

Usher has played in 13 games and has scored one goal and three points. He has one power-play goal. He has scored five goals and 24 career points. Usher is majoring in psychology and business administration.

To be named to the team a player must have a cummulative 3.00 grade point average, have earned at least 50 semester or 75 quarter hours, and be recommened by his head coach.

The Falcons won the NCHA regular season championship and finished with a 19-4-2 overall record. They were 10-3-1 in NCHA play.

Dahl has scored at least one point in 24 of the team's 25 regular season games. He scored two goals and two assists in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12. He leads the team in power-play points with 20 (7-13). Henkemeyer has 14 goals and 38 career points. He was named the NCHA Player of the Week on Dec. 4. UWRF has a 4-1 record when he scores a goal. Henkemeyer scored one goal and four points in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12.

Bucchino, who was also named to the 2006 first team, played in all 25 regular season games for the Falcons and finished with a 19-4-2 record. He has a 2.22 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. He recorded one shutout. Bucchino was named the NCHA's Player of the Week three times during the season. In 43 career games he has a 29-9-5 record with a 2.16 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. He has three career shutouts. He made a season-high 43 saves in a 3-1 win over St. Olaf. He made 24 saves in a 3-0 shutout of Stevens Point. Bucchino also has two assists.

Borgestad, who earned honorable mention to the 2006 All-NCHA team, is third on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 26 points. He is second in goals. He has scored five power-play goals and two game-winners. He has had eight multiple point games this year and has had 14 in his career. Borgestad picked up four assists in the team's 10-2 win over St. Mary's on Dec. 12.   The Falcons are 9-3-1 when he scores a goal. He has scored 27 career goals and 53 career points.

Robinson finished the regular season with two goals and four points. He is an outstanding defensive defenseman and played in 24 regular season games. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 4-3 win over Stevens Point on Nov. 18.

The Falcons won the NCHA regular season championship and finished with a 19-4-2 overall record. They were 10-3-1 in NCHA play.

Bucchino Named NCHA Player of the Week

Falcon hockey playerAJ Bucchino (Jr., Bow, N.H.) has been named the NCHA Player of the Week according to league Sports Information Director Layne Pitt.

Bucchino came up with two strong games in goal in helping the Falcons win the NCHA regular season championship last weekend. The Falcons beat UW-Stout, 4-1, on Friday at Hunt Arena and took a dramatic 4-3 overtime win at Stout on Saturday. On Friday Bucchino made 36 saves, including 18 in a third period when Stout out shot the Falcons, 18-7. Bucchino came back on Saturday with another outstanding effort making 37 saves. UWRF was out shot in the game, 40-21. In the two games he made 73 saves and had a .948 save percentage. Bucchino ends the regular season with a 19-4-2 record with a 2.22 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. It is the third time this season that Bucchino has been named the NCHA Player of the Week.

Falcons Beat Stout; Win NCHA Title

Dustin Norman scored a power-play goal 46 seconds into overtime to help lead the Falcon men’s hockey team to a 4-3 win at UW-Stout on Saturday night.

With the win the Falcons tied for the NCHA championship. The Falcons get the No. 1 seed for the NCHA playoffs and will host a first round playoff series next weekend at Hunt Arena against Lake Forest. It is the first NCHA regular season title for the Falcons since the 1996 season.

UWRF led 2-1 after the first period. There was no scoring in the second period. Stout scored twice in the third period and the Falcons once.

Pat Borgestad got the Falcons on the score board first with a goal at 3:42 of the first period. It was his 13th goal of the season and he was assisted by Derek Hansberry and TJ Dahl. Late in the period the Falcons went on their first power play scored. Borgestad scored his second goal of the game, and 14th of the season, at 19:01. Tyler Kostiuk and Jim Henkemeyer got the assists. UWS came back just 38 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game. Matt Mlynarczyk got the goal. UWS out shot the Falcons, 14-7, in the first period.

There was no scoring in the third period and Stout again out shot UWRF, 14-3.

Stout tied the game when Paul Henderson scored at 4:16 of the third period. The Falcons went ahead, 3-2, at the 10 minute mark of the period when Hansberry scored his 20th goal of the season with UWRF on the power play. He was assisted by Dahl. But just 22 seconds later Stout tied the game at 3-3 when Mlynarczyk scored his second goal of the game. UWS held a 12-10 advantage in shots in the period.

UWS took a minor penalty with 21 seconds to play in the third period. That set up Norman’s unassisted game winning goal. It was Norman’s eighth goal of the year and his second game-winner of the season.

UWS out shot the Falcons, 40-21. UWRF was called for five minor penalties and Stout for seven. The Falcon power play was the difference in the game finishing 3-4. Stout was 0-2.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 37 saves and Stout’s Mike Stone stopped 17 shots. Bucchino’s record improves to 19-4-2.

The Falcons finish the regular season 19-4-2 overall and 10-3-1 in NCHA play.

Falcons Beat Stout, 4-1; Play For First Place on Saturday

The Falcons topped Stout, 4-1, on Friday night at Hunt Arena and the win sets up a game for first place on Saturday in Menomonie.

If the Falcons win at Stout, they would claim a tie for the NCHA regular season championship. A Stout win or tie, would give the Blue Devils the title.

In Friday’s win in front of 1,575 fans, UWRF led 1-0 after one and 2-1 after two.

The Falcons grabbed a 1-0 lead at 18:50 of the first period when Derek Hansberry scored his 18th goal of the season. He scored just after a face off and was assisted by TJ Dahl.

UWRF grabbed a 2-0 lead at 4:42 of the second period when Sean Pettinger scored his first collegiate goal. He beat the goalie with a shot from the point and was assisted by Dahl and Hansberry. Stout got back to within one when Andy Wiesner scored a power-play goal at 14:55.

The Falcons scored two unanswered third period goals. Dustin Norman scored at 11:28 with assists to Chris Robinson and Dahl. It was his seventh goal of the year. With just 3:32 to play Hansberry scored his second of the game and 19th of the season with UWRF on the power-play. He was assisted by Jim Henkemeyer.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 36 saves and improved his record to 18-4-2. He made 18 saves in the third period that had UWS out shoot UWRF, 18-7. Several shots came when the Falcons took two minor penalties with just 3:27 to play. But Bucchino and the Falcon penalty killers kept Stout off the scoreboard. Stout goalie Mike Stone made 26 saves.

UWRF was called for seven minor penalties and Stout five. UWRF finished 1-3 on the power play and Stout was 1-4.

The Falcons, now 18-4-2 overall and 9-3-1 in the NCHA, will play at Stout on Saturday with action starting at 7:30 p.m.

Falcons Lose 4-2 Game to St. Scholastica

St. Scholastica opened up a 2-0 lead and used the advantage to earn a 4-2 win over the Falcons at Hunt Arena on Saturday night.

SS lead 2-0 after one period and 3-2 after two.

St. Scholastica jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period. Jordan Baird scored at 6:59 and Joey Martini scored at 15:41.

The Falcons got back to with 2-1 at 6:42 of the second period when Cory Baldwin scored his third goal of the season with assists to Jordan McIntyre and Jared Sailer. CSS got the two goal lead back at 18:11 when A.J. Tucker scored a power-play goal. The Falcons had taken back-to-back minor penalties and CSS capitalized during the second minor. The Falcons got an important goal with just 26 seconds to play in the period. Pat Borgestad scored a power-play goal – it was his 12th goal of the year. He was assisted by TJ Dahl and Dustin Norman. The goal came with the Falcons on a two-man advantage.

The Saints got the only goal of the third period – Aaron Spotts netted the goal at 11:49.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 30 saves and his record is now 17-4-2. CSS’s Tyler Johnson stopped 29 shots.

Both teams were called for six minor penalties and both teams finished 1-6 on the power play.

The Falcons, now 17-42 overall and 8-31 in the NCHA, will NCHA leading Stout on Friday at Hunt Arena with action starting at 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Beat Superior, 5-3

The Falcons scored three third period goals en route to a 5-3 win over UW-Superior on Friday night at Hunt Arena.

The game was tied, 1-1, after one and 2-2 after two.

Tyler Kostiuk got the Falcons on the board first when he scored his seventh goal of the season beating the UWS goalie on the short side. Kostiuk was assisted by Wade Harstad and the goal came at 7:22. UWS tied the game at 1-1 when Myles Palliser scored at 10:05.

At 9:43 of the second period UWRF took a five minute major penalty. UWS took a 2-1 lead at 12:31 when Joel Gaulrapp scored a power-play goal. The Falcons were able to kill off the rest of the penalty. UWS then took a minor penalty and Jared Sailer tied the game at 15:02 with a power-play goal. It was his fourth goal of the season and he was assisted by Harstad and Jim Henkemeyer. The Falcons had a 17-7 advantage in the period.

The Falcons took the lead for good at :32 of the final period when Derek Hansberry scored his team leading 17th goal of the season. He was assisted on the power-play goals by TJ Dahl. UWRF went ahead, 4-2 at 9:22 when Jordan McIntyre scored a short-handed goal – it was his fourth goal of the year. Mitch Kerns picked up the assists. UWS made it a one goal game at 12:17 when Seth Reda scored. But the Falcons responded at 15:44 when Harstad scored his fifth goal of the year. He was assisted on the power-play goal by Sailer and Kostiuk.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 27 saves. UWS goalie Chad Beiswenger stopped 31 shots.

UWRF finished 3-9 on the power play and UWS was 1-6.

The Falcons, now 17-3-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the NCHA, will host St. Scholastica on Saturday. Action starts at 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Salvage Tie at Lake Forest

The Falcon men's hockey team scored two late third period goals to salvage a 2-2 overtime tie at Lake Forest on Saturday night.

Lake Forest scored goals in the first and second periods. Brian Lee scored a power-play goal at 5:40 of the first period and Peter Morrison scored at 16:21 of the second stanza.

Tyler Kostiuk finally got the Falcons on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal with 4:03 to play in the third period. With goalie AJ Bucchino on the bench in favor of a sixth attacker, Derek Hansberry scored his team leading 16th goal of the season with just 42 second to play. TJ Dahl picked up the assist.

The Falcons dominated the shots on goal category finishing with 54. They had 16 in the first period, 13 in the second, 15 in the third and eight in overtime. LFC had 30 shots on goal. UWRF finished 0-3 on the power play and LFC was 1-6. The Falcons were called for six minor penalties and the Foresters for three.

Dahl's assist on the game tying goal was his 100th career point with the Falcons. This year he has scored 11 goals and has 40 points. He has scored 32 career goals and 68 career assists. He is the 31st Falcon hockey player to reach the 100 career point plateau.

The Falcons, now 16-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the NCHA, will host Superior on Friday at Hunt Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

UWRF enters the second to last weekend of the regular season in second place in the NCHA standings with 15 points. Stout leads with 19 points. St. Norbert and Superior have 13 points each. The Falcons have games left with Superior (Feb. 2), St. Scholastica (Feb. 3) and Stout (Feb. 9) at Hunt Arena. The Falcons play at Stout on Feb. 10 in the regular season finale.

SNC Scores Two Third Period Goals in 16 Seconds to Top Falcons

Two third period goals 16 seconds apart was the difference as the Falcon men's hockey team lost a 3-2 decision at St. Norbert on Friday night.

UWRF was ranked No. 3 and St. Norbert was ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com poll going into the game.

SNC led 1-0 after one and the game was tied, 1-1, after two.

St. Norbert got the only goal of the first period. Andrew Derton scored at 3:56. Just 56 seconds into the second period the Falcons tied the game. Derek Hansberry scored his 15th goal of the season.

The Falcons took a 2-1 lead at :57 of the third period when Pat Borgestad scored his 11th goal of the year. He was assisted by Sean Pettinger. The lead lasted until 14:20 when Matt Boyd scored to tie the game. Just 16 seconds later, Tyler Allen added a goal and that proved to be the difference. The Green Knights out shot the Falcons, 22-6, in the third period.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino stopped 32 shots and his record is now 16-3-1. St. Norbert goalie Kyle Jones stopped 20 shots.

The Falcons were 0-6 on the power play and St. Norbert finished 0-5. UWRF was called for seven minor penalties and SNC was called for eight.

The Falcons, now 16-3-1 overall and 7-2-0 in the NCHA, will play at Lake Forest on Saturday with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m.

Bucchino Named WIAC, NCHA Player of the Week

Falcon men's hockey player AJ Bucchino (Jr., Bow, N.H.) has been named the NCHA and WIAC Player of the Week.

The Falcon goalie has earned the recognition for the past two weeks.

Bucchino helped lead the Falcons to two wins last weekend and picked up his first shutout of the season. The Falcons beat UW-Stevens Point, 3-0, on Friday and UW-Eau Claire, 4-1, on Saturday. Bucchino stopped 24 shots in the win over Stevens Point. It was his third career shutout. On Saturday he stopped 32 shots to improve his record to 16-2-1. "AJ again made all the important saves he needed to," said Falcon Coach Steve Freeman. "He helped us weather the storm when we didn't play well in front of him. That's a sign of a good goalie and it means so much to the team." UWRF was out shot, 16-5, in the first period against Eau Claire, but he stopped all the shots to help the Falcons enter the locker room in a 0-0 tie. Bucchino has a 2.07 goals against average and a .935 save percentage this season. He has allowed only four goals in the team's last four games.

Harstad, Hansberry Score Twice to Lead Falcons to Win Over UWEC

Wade Harstad and Derek Hansberry each scored twice to help lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 4-1 win over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday night at Hunt Arena.

After a scoreless first period the Falcons led 2-1 after two.

Harstad started the scoring with his third goal of the year at 6:20. He was assisted by Tyler Kostiuk and Josh Meyers. Hansberry netted his 13th goal of the season at 8:05 to put the Falcons ahead, 2-0. He was assisted by TJ Dahl. UWEC got to within 2-1 at 18:54 when Sean Garrity scored.

The Falcons scored two goals in the final two minutes of the game. Harstad got his second of the game and fourth of the season at 18:00 with an assist to Mitch Kerns. Hansberry got his 14th goal of the season into an empty net with 50 seconds to play. He was assisted by Dahl.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino improved his record to 16-2-1 making 32 saves. UWEC goalie Ryan Mensing, who is now 6-9-2, made 22 saves.

Both teams finished 0-2 on the power play and both teams took two minor penalties in the fast paced game. The Falcons had 26 shots on goal and UWEC finished with 33.

The Falcons, now 16-2-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the NCHA, will play at St. Norbert on Friday in an important NCHA matchup. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Bucchino Records Shutout in 3-0 Win Over UWSP

Goalie AJ Bucchino made 24 saves to help lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 3-0 win over UW-Stevens Point Friday night at Hunt Arena.

Bucchino registered his first shutout of the season and third of his career. He made 11 saves in the first period, eight in the second and five in the third.

After a scoreless first period the Falcons scored twice in the second. Skating with a 4-3 man advantage, Derek Hansberry scored a power-play goal at 5:41. It was his 12th goal of the season. TJ Dahl and Jordan McIntyre got the assists. The Falcons went ahead, 2-0, at 8:02 of the period when Cory Baldwin scored his second goal of the year. He was assisted by Lance Malark and Mitch Kerns.

Dahl gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at 9:57 of the third period when he scored his 11th goal of the year. Hansberry and Dustin Norman picked up the assists.

UWRF finished 1-6 on the power play and UWSP was 0-2. The Falcons took five minor penalties and UWSP took nine.

UWSP goalie Marcus Paulson stopped 33 shots. The Falcons had a 36-24 advantage in shots on goal.

The Falcons, now 15-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the NCHA, will host Eau Claire on Saturday at Hunt Arena. Action starts at 7:05 p.m.

Bucchino Named WIAC, NCHA Player of the Week

Falcon AJ Bucchino (Jr., Bow, N.H.) has been named WIAC and NCHA Player of the Week.

Bucchino played a key role in the team's weekend road sweep of St. Thomas, 2-1, and St. Mary's, 5-2. Bucchino, 5-10, 185 pounds, stopped 36 of 37 shots in the win at St. Thomas and came back the next night to make 39 saves on 41 shots at St. Mary's. He finished the weekend with a 2-0 record and a .961 save percentage. "AJ played brilliantly both nights. He was the difference maker," said Falcon Coach Steve Freeman. Bucchino has a 14-2-1 record with a 2.27 goals against average and a .929 save percentage this year.

The Falcons play two NCHA games at Hunt Arena this weekend. On Friday the Falcons host UW-Stevens Point and on Saturday UW-Eau Claire. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.

Dahl Scores Once, Has Two Helpers in UWRF's 5-2 Win at St. Mary's

TJ Dahl scored once and had two assists to help lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 5-2 win over St. Mary's on Saturday night in Winona, Minn.

UWRF led 1-0 after one and 3-0 after two.

Chris Robinson got the Falcons on the scoreboard first with his second goal of the season at 4:57 of the opening period. He was assisted by Dahl. The Falcons went ahead 2-0 at 10:05 of the second period when Jared Sailer scored his third goal of the year. He was assisted by Cory Baldwin and Jim Jensen. Dustin Norman put the Falcons ahead 3-0 with his sixth goal of the season at 17:12. Dahl picked up the assist.

At 3:09 of the third the Cardinals made it a two goal game wen Adam Gill scored. But Dahl's 10th goal of the season at 6:14 put the Falcons ahead by two again. Dahl was assisted on the power-play goal by Jensen and Jim Henkemeyer. Gill struck again for SMU with a short-handed goal at 12:11 to make it a 4-2 game. Mitch Kerns scored the final goal of the game at 14:03 with assists to Jordan McIntyre and Lance Malark. The Falcons took a five-minute major checking from behind penalty after Kerns' goal and skated all but the final eight seconds of the game short handed. But the Cardinals were kept off the scoreboard. There were a total of 34 shots on goal RF 15, SMU 19) in a wild third period.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino had a second straight busy night. He made 39 saves - 12 in the first, 10 in the second and 17 in the third. In Friday's 2-1 win over St. Thomas, Bucchino stopped 37 shots. Bucchino is now 14-3-2 this season. SMU goalie, Dan Smith, stopped 31 shots.

The Falcons were called for 12 penalties and 43 minutes. SMU took 13 minor penalties. UWRF finished 1-6 on the power play and SMU was 0-3.

The Falcons, now 14-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the NCHA, will return to league play on Friday when they host Stevens Point at Hunt Arena. Action starts at 7:05 p.m.

Borgestad, Hansberry Goals; Bucchino's Goaltending Help Falcons to Win

Pat Borgestad and Derek Hansberry scored goals and goalie AJ Bucchino stopped 37 shots in helping lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 2-1 win at St. Thomas on Friday night.

The Falcons opened the scoring at 9:55 of the first period when Borgestad scored his 10th goal of the season. He was assisted by line mates Hansberry and TJ Dahl.

After a scoreless second period, UST tied the game at :28 when Kevin Rollwagen scored.

Hansberry netted the game-winner with just 3:46 to play in the game. He scored his 11th goal of the year with assists from Dahl and Borgestad.

With 1:56 to go in the first period the Falcons were called for a five minute major checking from behind penalty. They got through the rest of the period with no damage. Then just 14 seconds into the second period, the Falcons picked up a two-minute minor penalty and successfully killed off the UST two-man advantage.

The Falcons were out shot in all three periods, 6-4, 16-8 and 16-9. UWRF had eight penalties for 27 minutes and UST was called for five minor penalties. UWRF was 0-5 on the power play while the Falcons held the Tommies off the scoreboard on seven power play chances.

Bucchino made the 37 saves and improved his record to 13-2-1. UST goalie Cameron Voss stopped 19 shots.

The Falcons, now 13-2-1 overall, will play at St. Mary's on Saturday with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.

Six Goal Third Period Leads Falcons to Win Over Bethel

The Falcon men's hockey team exploded for six goals in the third period en route to a 7-4 win over Bethel on Saturday night at Hunt Arena.

BU led 2-0 after one and 3-1 after two.

Bethel jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead scoring two power-play goals. Jon Kramer netted both - the first at 1:37 and the second at 8:26.

The Falcons made it a 2-1 game at 10:31 of the second period when Cory Baldwin scored his first collegiate goal. Mitch Kerns and AJ Bucchino got the assists. BU came back to take a two goal lead with just 22 seconds to go in the third period when the Royals scored their third power-play goal of the game. Kent Bostrom got the goal.

The Falcon onslaught started early and with 2:16 the Falcons had tied the game. Wade Harstad got things going with his first goal of the season at 1:44. He was assisted by Tyler Kostiuk. Jordan McIntyre tied the game, 3-3, at 2:16 when he scored his third goal of the year with assists to Kerns and Lance Malark.

But Bethel took a 4-3 lead at 7:19 when Steve Eastman scored his team's third power-play goal of the game.

From there on the Falcons were in control scoring four straight goals. Pat Borgestad scored his ninth goal of the year at 8:49 to tie the game again. TJ Dahl and Derek Hansberry assisted. Dahl has scored in every game this season. Tom Flikeid picked a great time to score his first collegiate goal - and it proved to be the game-winner. His goal at 13:18 gave UWRF a 5-4 lead and he was assisted by Jared Sailer. UWRF added two insurance goals. Hansberry scored his second of the game and 10th of the season at 16:21. He was assisted by Dahl and Jim Henkemeyer. Harstad netted the last goal, his second of the game and season, at 17:01 with an assist to Kostiuk.

UWRF goalie Bucchino made 20 saves to improve his record to 12-2-1. BU's Aaron Damjanovich made 29 saves and he is now 1-2-1.

The Falcons outshot the Royals by 14-4 in the deciding third period. UWRF was called for five minor penalties and BU went to the penalty box three times. BU was 3-5 on the power play and the Falcons were 0-3. This was the first game the Falcons have not scored a power-play goal.

The Falcons, now 12-2-1 overall, will next play at St. Thomas on Friday with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.

Falcons Get 4-4 Tie at Marian

Jim Jensen scored a power-play goal with 3:05 to play to help the Falcon men's hockey team get a 4-4 tie in overtime at Marian on Thursday night.

The game was tied, 1-1 after one period and Marian led 3-2 after two.

Jared Sailer gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead at 6:51 of the first period when he scored his second goal of the season. He was assisted by Devin Underwood. Marian tied the game with a goal at 15:49.

The Sabres went ahead, 3-1 with two second period goals. They scored at 10:54 and added a power-play goal at 15:07. But Pat Borgestad got the Falcons back in the game with a power-play goal at 18:17. It was his eighth goal of the season and he was assisted by TJ Dahl and Jim Henkemeyer.

The Falcons tied the game, 3-3, when Dustin Norman scored a short-handed unassisted goal at 6:21 of the third period. It was the first short-handed goal for the Falcons this year. It was Norman's fifth goal of the year. But MC took a 4-3 lead at 12:58 with their second power-play goal of the game.

That set up Jensen's power-play goal. It was his third goal of the season and he was assisted by Dahl and Borgestad.

AJ Bucchino made 36 saves and his record is now 11-2-1. Cullen Caldwell stopped 33 shots.

UWRF had 18 shots in the first period and had four in the overtime. MC outshot the Falcons, 14-6, in the third period and had six overtime shots. Both teams finished 2-7 on the power play.

The Falcons, now 11-2-1 overall, will next host Bethel on Saturday at Hunt Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Dominate St. Mary's at Home, 11-2

Fresh off their second loss of the season this past Saturday, River Falls came home on Tuesday to play St. Mary's and stopped nothing short of blowing out the Cardinals, 10-2.

The Falcons scored three while St. Mary's only got one in the first. Jim Henkemeyer got the first score of the game at 6:39 on the power play, assisted by TJ Dahl and Derek Hansberry. Mitch Kerns got into the scoring action at 11:28 with the assist to Lance Malark and Jordan McIntyre. River Falls's third score of the period came via Dahl at 14:48, assisted by Hansberry and Pat Borgestad. St. Mary's cut the Falcon lead to two thanks to an unassisted goal by Anthony Bohn at 15:56.

River Falls showed dominance in the second where they were able to bang home six goals. Goals came from Hansberry on the power play (1:28), Dustin Norman on the power play (6:35), Dahl (9:29), McIntyre (10:54), Hansberry again on the power play (12:23), and Norman again (19:53).

St. Mary's was able to score one goal in the third thanks to Jesse Polk but that was all the damage. Hansberry got his third goal of the game to record a hat trick 8:28 into the period.

The Falcons ten goal output was their highest scoring game since dropping 14 scores on St. Scholastica in 2003.

AJ Bucchino started in goal and played two-thirds of the game. Bucchino made 16 saves while only allowing one goal. His record in net matches the Falcon overall record and improves to 11-2-0. Tony Stoehr played the third period in goal for River Falls and made nine saves while allowing one score.

Nick Berra played 28:31 in goal for the Cardinals and made 17 saves while allowing five goals. Dan Smith relieved Berra halfway through the second and also made 17 saves while allowing five goals.

The Falcons next game in on January 4th when they visit Marian. The game is set to start at 7pm.

Falcon Win Streak Snapped at UWS, 4-2

Riding a 10 game winning streak, the Falcons went into UW-Superior looking to push their streak to 11. River Falls came up short in the game and suffered their first conference loss off the season, 4-2, on Saturday night.

UWS jumped out to a big lead early. First period goals from David Moncur (12:24) and Branden Desmet (14:46) pushed the Jacket lead to two. Desmet scored short-handed. He would get his second goal of the game 4:10 into the second which would prove to be the game winner.

RF tried to make a comeback attempt but only recieved goals from Jim Henkemeyer at the end of the second on a power play (18:26) He was assisted by Mitch Kerns and Tyler Kostiuk. Pat Borgestad made it a 3-2 game 17:54 into the third Derek Hansberry and TJ Dahl assisted. UWS's Nate Rein scored into an empty-net with :40 remaining to end the scoring.

AJ Bucchino was in goal for the Falcons as his record drops to 10-2-0 on the year. Bucchino made 30 saves. Chad Beiswenger got the win in goal for UWS while making seven saves. Baron Bradley also played in goal and stopped 26 shots.

UWS held a 34-30 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons finished 1-6 on the power play and UWS was 0-4.

The Falcons look to rebound from their defeat when they host St. Mary's on Tuesday. The puck drops at 7:05 pm.

Falcons Get 4-3 Win at St. Scholastica With Late Borgestad Goal

Pat Borgestad scored with just 55 seconds to play to help lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 4-3 win at St. Scholastica on Friday night.

UWRF had 1-0 and 3-1 leads in the game. CSS tied the game, 3-3 in the third period before Borgestad scored his sixth goal of the season with assists to TJ Dahl and Derek Hansberry at 19:05. The Falcons took a minor penalty and killed off the last 48 seconds a skater short.

The Falcons grabbed a 1-0 lead at 16:53 of the first period when Mitch Kerns scored his third goal of the season. Jordan McIntyre picked up the assist. Both teams scored in the second period. CSS's Jake Nelson scored a power-play goal at 3:37 to tie the game. UWRF went back ahead, 2-1, at 7:29 when Dahl scored a power-play goal. It was Dahl's seventh goal of the season and he was assisted by Jim Jensen and Jim Henkemeyer.

Four goals were scored in a hectic third period. UWRF increased its lead to 3-1 when Jared Sailer scored his first goal of the season at 10:28. He was assisted by T.J. Warkentin and Cory Baldwin. But CSS came back with two more power-play goals to tie the game. A.J. Tucker scored at 14:18 and Trevor Geiger scored at 16:41. That set up Borgestad's game-winner.

UWRF finished 1-5 on the power play and CSS was 3-6 with the man advantage. CSS out shot the Falcons, 35-19, in the game, including 15-6 in the first period and 13-6 in the third.

UWRF goalie AJ Bucchino picked up his 10th win of the season making 32 saves. CSS goalie Tyler Johnson stopped 15 shots.

The Falcons, now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the NCHA, will play at UW-Superior on Saturday. The puck drops at 8 p.m.

Henkemeyer Named NCHA, WIAC Player of the Week

Jim Henkemeyer (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) has been named the NCHA and WIAC Player of the Week. The defenseman played a huge role in the team's two NCHA victories over the weekend. The Falcons beat Lake Forest, 3-1, on Friday and then beat No. 1 ranked St. Norbert, 3-2, on Saturday. Henkemeyer first assisted a second period TJ Dahl score against Lake Forest. Henkemeyer, 5-11, 183 pounds, recorded two goals against St. Norbert to push the Falcon win streak to nine. His first score cam 3:54 into the game and his second came 16:18 into the third and that proved to be the game winner. "Jim has been an offensive force for us this season," said Falcon Head Coach Steve Freeman. "He has been extremely effective running our power play and playing from the blue line." He now has six goals and 10 points.

Falcons Score Three and Defeat No. 1 Green Knights

Two Jim Henkemeyer goals helped the Falcons edge No. 1 nationally ranked St. Norbert in a NCHA match-up, 3-2, at Hunt Arena.

Henkemeyer put the Falcons in front early with a power-play goal 3:54 into the game. Henkemeyer was assisted on the score by Jim Jensen and Tyler Kostiuk. St. Norbert tied the game at one midway through the period via Marc Belanger's power play score. The first would come to a close with the score knotted at one which would be the same score at the end of the second.

St. Norbert would take the lead 8:23 into the third thanks to Lonny Forrester. River Falls would even the score at two following Derek Hansberry's goal with 9:25 remaining in the game. Hansberry was assisted by TJ Dahl as Dahl continues his streak of collecting a point in each of the 10 Falcon games. River Falls took the lead for good 16:18 into the period on Henkemeyer's second score of the game, assisted by Kostiuk.

The Falcons took a penalty with 2:11 to play and with about a minute to play SNC pulled its goal for an extra attacker. But the Falcon penalty killers kept the Green Knight power-play off the scoreboard.

AJ Bucchino was in net again for the Falcons and improved his, along with the Falcon overall record, to 9-1-0. Bucchino made 36 saves on the night.

Kyle Jones manned the pipes for the Green Knights and made 25 saves in the losing effort.

The Falcons look to push their winning streak to 10 when they visit St. Scholastica. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Dominate Lake Forest At Hunt

AJ Bucchino's stellar goaltending aided by two TJ Dahl points helped the Falcons improve their NCHA record to 3-0 on the year with a 3-1 win against Lake Forest.

Both teams went scoreless through the first period but the Falcons had a 19-5 advantage in shots. The second period was when the Falcons did their damage as they were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Dahl found the net first 7:30 into the period with a power-play goal, assisted by Jim Henkemeyer. With the score, Dahl has now successfully gotten a point in all nine of the Falcon games. RF scored again just under three minutes later thanks to Jim Jensen's power-play goal. Jensen was assisted on the play by Dahl. Tyler Kostiuk got into the scoring column at the 13:05 mark, assisted by Mitch Kerns. The Falcons skated into the break with the shutout in tact.

The third did not bring much offense to either team yet Lake Forest was able to sneak in a power play goal 12:44 into the period via Tyler Canal. The power play goal was the first allowed by the Falcons in the last 37 opponent power play opportunities.

Bucchino came up with multiple saves, nearly recording his first shutout of the season. Bucchino racked up 29 saves and improves his record to 8-1 overall.

Brandon Kohuck watched the pipes for Lake Forest and allowed three goals and made 49 saves in the losing effort.

The Falcons next welcome St. Norbert to Hunt Arena on Saturday night. The puck is set to drop at 7:05.

Falcons Edge NCHA Opponent Stevens Point, 4-3

In their second away game to open up NCHA play, the River Falls men's hockey team dominated Stevens Point and skated home with a 4-3 win. The Falcons inprove their record to 7-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the NCHA.

Tyler Kostiuk started the scoring for the Falcons early with his fourth goal of the season at 5:01. Kostiuk was assisted on the score by Wade Harstad and Jim Jensen. RF went into the break with a 1-0 advantage over the Pointers.

SP's Taylor Guay evened the score 4:34 into the second period with even lines. The Falcons took the lead back six minutes later thanks to Jason Usher's score. Chris Robinson increased the Falcon lead at 17:25 with his first goal of the season. Robinson was assisted on the goal by Derek Hansberry and TJ Dahl.

The Pointers got within one 9:47 into the third period following a Sean Fish score. The Falcons would not let SP come back as Pat Borgestad scored the fourth Falcon goal of the game and his fifth goal of the season coming at 14:33. SP got within one at 15:55 thanks to Brett Beckfeld's score but that was all the Pointers would get.

AJ Bucchino was in net for the Falcons, allowing three goals and making 31 saves on the night.

Marcus Paulson was in goal for the Pointers and allowed four goals while making 22 saves. He was pulled in favor of an empty net comeback with :58 remaining in the contest.

Falcons Win NCHA Opener at Eau Claire, 3-1

The Falcon men's hockey team opened its NCHA season with a 3-1 win at UW-Eau Claire on Friday night.

The Falcons scored single goals in each period while UWEC scored its goal in the second.

UWEC's Tyler Tredell was put in the penalty box for interference at 14:19 and the Falcons took advantage of the situation to grab a 1-0 lead. Pat Borgestad scored the power-play goal at 14:48. It was his fourth goal of the season and he was assisted by Dustin Norman and Jim Henkemeyer.

UWEC tied the game at 2:18 of the second period when Mike Schneider scored his first goal of the season. But it took the Falcons just 16 seconds to take the lead back. Derek Hansberry scored what proved to be the game-winner at 2:34 with an assist to TJ Dahl. It was Hansberry's fourth goal of the season. Dahl has picked up at least one point in all seven Falcon games this season.

The Falcons added an empty-net power-play goal with just 13 seconds to play in the game when Hansberry scored his second of the game with an assist to Borgestad.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino improved his record to 6-1 this year making 26 saves. UWEC's Ryan Mensing, who stopped 44 shots in his team's 3-2 win over the Falcons at Hunt Arena on Oct. 27, made 26 saves. He is now 4-2 this year.

The Falcons finished 2-8 on the power play and UWEC was 0-6. The Falcons have now killed off 31 straight opponent power play opportunities. UWRF was called for eight minor penalties and UWEC for 10. UWEC out shot the Falcons, 8-3, in the first period but the Falcons had 14-11 and 12-8 advantages in the second and third stanzas.

The Falcons, now 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCHA, will play at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Falcons Extend Win Streak to 5, Beating St. Johns 4-1

AJ Bucchino's stellar goaltending helped River Falls knock off St. John's at Hunt Arena on Saturday night, 4-1.

Despite the win, the Falcons suffered a loss early in the second period when defender Chris Robinson found himself flying head first into the boards. Robinson was on the ice for several minutes before being rolled off on a stretcher to receive ambulance care. Robinson was hit into the boards by SJU's Gabriel Harren who received a checking from behind major along with a game misconduct, removing him from the rest of the game. Robinson left the rink on his own power following the game.

SJU got on the board first in the first period thanks to a goal from Matt Wocken 7:28 in. RF battled back just over three minutes later when Mitch Kerns put in an unassisted goal. Kerns now has two scores on the season.

The Falcons Tyler Kostiuk scored the only goal of the second period on a power play with 2:57 left in the period, assisted by Dustin Norman. Kostiuk's goal is his third of the season and proved to be the game winner.

Derek Hansberry rattled in his third goal of the year in the third 7:55 in. He was assisted on the score by TJ Dahl and Pat Borgestad. Jim Jensen put SJU away for good with RF's fourth score of the game coming with 4:56 remaining in the game. The goal was Jensen's first of the season and he was assisted by Jason Usher and Kostiuk.

AJ Bucchino played lights out in goal and made 30 saves on the night. His record now improves to 5-1-0 on the season.

Vince Wheeler was in net for SJU and made 24 saves while allowing four pucks through.

The Falcons continue their season next Friday when they visit Eau Claire. The puck will drop at 7:05.

Henkemeyer Helps Lift Falcons Past St. Olaf, 3-1

Jim Henkemeyer's two power play goals helped River Falls defeat St. Olaf on Saturday night at Hunt Arena, 3-1.

Dustin Norman got the puck sliding for RF as he knocked in a goal just :24 into the game. Norman's score was his second of the season and it was assisted by Jordan McIntyre and Wade Harstad. The Falcons ended the period with the one goal advantage.

St. Olaf tied the score at six thanks to Andy Ockuly's score coming 17:02 into the second period. The tie did not last long as RF's Henkemeyer put in a power play score at 19:20. Henkemeyer's goal would prove to be the game winner but he was not done for the game. Norman and TJ Dahl assisted Henkemeyer's effort.

Henkemeyer made an appearance in the scoring column for a second time 8:48 into the third period on a power play. His second score of the game was also his third goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Norman and Dahl. With the insurance goal in the bag, the Falcons skated to a 3-1 win and extend their winning streak to three.

AJ Bucchino was in net for the Falcons and allowed one goal and made 43 saves. Bucchino is now 3-1-0 on the young season.

Brycen Eberwein goaltended for the Oles and made 24 saves despite allowing three scores.

The Falcons improve their record to 3-1-0 on the season and look to increase their wins come Friday when they visit Augsburg. The puck will drop at 7 pm.

Hansberry's Two Goals Help Falcons to Win at GAC

Derek Hansberry scored twice to help lead the men's hockey team to a 4-2 win at Gustavus Adolphus on Friday night.

The Falcons led 2-1 after one period and 4-2 after two.

UWRF jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:42 when Pat Borgestad scored his second goal of the season with an assist to Wade Harstad. The Falcons made it a 2-0 game at 7:44 when Hansberry scored a power-play goal with assists to TJ Dahl and Borgestad. GAC made it a 2-1 game at 10:15 when Eric Bigham scored a power-play goal.

The Falcons went ahead, 3-1, at 7:12 of the second period when Dahl scored his third goal of the season, unassisted. It proved to be the game-winning goal and was a power-play goal. Ben Ollila scored a power-play goal at 13:19 to cut the Falcon lead to 3-2. Hansberry then scored another power-play goal at 18:46. He was assisted by Jim Henkemeyer and Dustin Norman.

Falcon goalie AJ Bucchino made 24 saves to get the win. He is now 2-1. GAC goalie Kevin Johnson stopped 24 shots. The Falcons had six shots in the first period, 11 in the second and seven in the third. GAC put nine shots on goal in the first period, three in the second and 12 in the third. UWRF was 3-14 on the power play while GAC was 2-13. The Falcons were called for 14 minor penalties and the Gusties, 0-1, were whistled for 15 minors.

The Falcons, now 2-1 overall, will host St. Olaf on Saturday at Hunt Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Freeman Collects 200th Career Victory as Falcons Beat Vikings, 6-4

Falcon Head Coach Steve Freeman collected his 200th career victory with the Falcons as River Falls knocked off the Lawrence Vikings, 6-4, on Saturday night at Hunt Arena. Freeman's record now sits at 200-86-19 as he adds another chapter into the Falcon record books.

RF jumped out to an early lead when TJ Dahl got his first goal of the season, assisted by Pat Borgestad and Jason Usher. Lawrence would knot the game at one 5:25 later as Aaron LaFave put the puck in the net. The Falcons would take the lead again at 9:41 when Jordan McIntrye scored his first collegiate goal. The Vikings would not go away as they scored again with only three seconds remaining in the period, this time via Masa Takahashi.

Borgestad would put the Falcons back on top 12:05 into the second with his first goal of the year, Dahl and Derek Hansberry were on the assist. RF doubled its lead with 1:37 remaining in the period thanks to Tyler Kostiuk's score, assisted by Jim Jensen and Sean Pettinger. The second would come to a close with a two goal Falcon advantage.

The third period would turn out to be the most intense as Lawerence was able to battle back. Aaron LaFave tapped in a score :22 into the period for the Vikings to cut the RF lead to one. Joe Searl got the equalizer for Lawrence as he netted a goal at 12:16. Following the goal, Falcon goaltender Tony Stoehr was pulled in favor of AJ Bucchino. With Freeman's 200th win in the balance, Falcon veterans took the initiative to find a "W". Dahl scored his second goal of the game at 14:10 which proved to be the game winner. Borgestad and Hansberry assisted on the play, giving Borgestad three points in the game to lead all Falcons. Dustin Norman sealed the deal for Freeman and the Falcons with a rebound goal at 18:22, assisted by Skylar Christoffersen and Wade Harstad.

Stohr played all but 7:44 in goal for the Falcons and did not come out with his best game. He stopped 18 shots while allowing four goals. Bucchino finished the game in goal and tallied three saves. Bucchino's record improves to 1-1 on the season.

Andrew Isaac was in net for Lawrence and allowed six goals while making 55 saves. Isaac was constantly pressured by the Falcons who scored four power play goals on the night.

With Freeman's 200th win in the record books, the Falcons can now look to their next contest when they visit Gustavus Adolphus on Friday. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. The Falcons will be home on Saturday to face St. Olaf, that game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Drop Season Opener Against EC

Two Falcon scores were not enough to overcome UW-Eau Claire as the Blugolds took the game at Hunt Arena, 3-2, Friday night.

EC jumped out to the early lead when Tyler Trudell popped in a goal at 13:02. River Falls battled back five minutes later when Jim Henkemeyer knocked in a power play goal, assisted TJ Dahl. The first period came to a close with the score knotted at one.

The Blugolds scored the only goal of the second period at 5:58. The momentum was in EC's favor and they did not look back.

The third period brought more scoring early from Evan Byers at 9:21. River Falls made one last attempt on a power play to get the game close and were successful. Mitch Kerns knocked in his first collegiate goal for the Falcons at 11:58. The game would be close the rest of the way but the Falcons came up short of an equalizer.

A.J. Bucchino was in goal for the Falcons and had a less than stellar night. Bucchino allowed three goals while making 22 saves.

Ryan Mensing played in the net for EC and proved to be dominating. Mensing allowed only two goals and made 42 saves.

The Falcons next play on Saturday when they welcome Lawrence to Hunt Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
