Falcons Lose at UWP in WIAC Playoffs

The Falcon men's basketball team lost a 70-55 decision at UW-Platteville Tuesday night in the first round of the WIAC Tournament.

The Falcons trailed, 36-28 at the half, but battled back to within 38-37 to start the second half. The Falcons went on a 9-2 run to get within one with 13:59 to play. Jeff Holt hit two three-pointers and Ryan Thompson scored two to help the Falcons in the run. UWP then went ahead by 38-34 before Holt hit two free throws with 12:37 to play to get the Falcons to within 41-39. But then the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to get a 49-39 lead with 10:04 to play. The Falcons could only get to within eight points, 54-46, with 6:08 to play.

Hans Hoeg led the Falcons with 16 points. He was 3-7 from the field, including 2-4 from three-point range. The WIAC's leading free throw shooter was a perfect 8-8 from the line. Holt finished with nine points, including two three-pointers. Holt led the Falcons with five rebounds and Scott Kelly had four. Ryan Thompson led the Falcons with five assists and he scored six points. The Falcons shot 16-39 (.410) from the field, including 6-20 (.300) from behind the arc. They were 17-23 (.739) from the line.

Platteville, now 19-6 and the WIAC's No. 1 seeded team, was led by Sean Krause and Brandon Temperly who both scored 15 points. Mark Gossens added 11 and Brad Reitzner scored 10. Gossens led all rebounders with eight and Temperly had six assists. UWP, which eliminated the Falcons from the 2004 WIAC playoffs in the semifinals at UWRF, shot 25-51 (.490) from the field, including 6-15 (.400) from three-point range. The Pioneers were 14-22 (.636) from the line. UWP held a 29-24 advantage in rebounds and they finished with 13 offensive boards.

The Falcons end their season 8-17 overall.
