Falcons Finish Fourth at WIAC Tournament Oct. 26, 2003 The Falcon tennis team finished fourth at the WIAC Tournament, and finished fourth in the overall standings, held over the weekend in Madison. Amanda Gray was the top Falcon finisher and Falcon Coach Lee Lueck was named the WIAC Coach of the Year. Gray finished second at No. 2 singles. She beat a Stout opponent, 7-5, 6-1, in her first match. In the second round she defeated a La Crosse opponent, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. She lost in the finals to an Oshkosh opponent, 6-1, 6-4. She finished the year with a 15-3 record. Megan Knobloch and Amber Weissinger each placed third. Knobloch, playing at No. 3, opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over a La Crosse opponent. She then lost to an Eau Claire opponent, 6-1, 6-2. She came back to win third place with a 6-3, 6-1 win over a Stevens Point player. She finished the year with a 10-8 singles record. Weissinger, playing at No. 5, opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over an Oshkosh player. She then lost in the second round to a La Crosse opponent, 6-4, 7-5. She came back to beat an Eau Claire player, 6-4, 6-1, to place third. She finished the year with a 12-6 overall record. Jordan Anderson and Leah Baron both placed fourth. Anderson, playing at No. 1, took a 6-1, 7-5 win over a Whitewater player in the first round. But she lost to a La Crosse player, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. In the match for third place she lost to an Eau Claire player, 6-3, 6-2. Anderson finished the year with a 13-5 record. Baron, playing at No. 4, took a 6-1, 6-0 win to open play. She then lost to La Crosse player, 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. In the match for third place she lost to a Whitewater player, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. She finished with a 9-3 record. Becky Briese, playing at No. 6, finished fifth. She lost in the first round to a Stout player, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. In the match for fifth place, she lost to a Stevens Point player, 6-0, 6-1. She finished the year with a 14-3 record. In tournament play, La Crosse finished with 50 points followed by Eau Claire 49, Whitewater 46, River Falls 37, Oshkosh 36, Stevens Point 18 and Stout 16. In the final WIAC standings, La Crosse won the championship with 20 points followed by Eau Claire 19, Whitewater 15, River Falls 12, Oshkosh 9, Stevens Point 5 and Stout 4. Falcons Compete in WIAC Tourney Oct. 25, 2003 The Falcon tennis team competed in the first day of the WIAC tournament on Saturday in Madison. The doubles competition was completed with two Falcon teams placing fourth. The Falcon No. 1 team of Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray placed fourth. They opened with an 8-0 win over a Stout team. They then lost in the semifinals to a La Crosse team, 8-1. In the match for third place they lost to an Oshkosh team, 9-8 (7-4). The No. 2 Falcon team of Megan Knobloch and Amber Weissinger also placed fourth. They opened with an 8-5 win over an Oshkosh team. They then lost to an Eau Claire team in the semifinals, 8-3. In the match for third place they lost to a Whitewater team, 8-6. The No. 3 team of Becky Briese and Sarah VandenHoek lost their first match to a La Crosse team, 8-3. They received a bye in the second round, but then lost the match for fifth place to a Stout team, 8-3. The Falcons will compete in the singles competition on Sunday in Madison. Go to the WIAC tennis web site. Falcons Lose at UWEC, 9-0 Oct. 16, 2003 The Falcons dropped a 9-0 decision at UW-Eau Claire Thursday afternoon. Jordan Anderson, playing at No. 1 singles, lost a tight 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) decision to Eau Claire's Jenny Stafford. Playing at No. 5, Becky Briese also lost a close match, 1-6, 6-4 (10-8) to Eau Claire's Molly Hunt. The match was the final dual meet for the Falcons this year. The Falcons, now 12-3 overall and 3-3 in the WIAC, next participate in the WIAC Tournament on Oct. 25-26 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Singles Falcons Lose at UWLC, 7-2 Oct. 11, 2003 The Falcons dropped a 7-2 decision at UW-La Crosse Saturday morning. It was just the second loss of the year for the Falcons. The Falcons picked up two points in singles play. Amanda Gray, playing at No. 2, came back and defeated Erica Schmelzer, in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Megan Knobloch, playing at No. 3, beat La Crosse's Louie Dubinski, 6-0, 6-2. Gray improved her record to 13-1 and Knobloch improved to 8-6. The Falcon No. 1 doubles team of Gray and Jordan Anderson lost for the first time this year. The Falcons, now 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC, next travel to UW-Eau Claire on Thursday. 2 Falcons Get Big Win Over Oshkosh, 5-4 Oct. 3, 2003 The Falcons won four of six singles matches and one of three doubles matches to earn a big 5-4 win over UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at the Crabtree Courts. The conference win will be a big plus for the team as it tries to climb in the final WIAC standings. The loss was the first for Oshkosh in four dual meets. Last year the Titans beat the Falcons, 9-0. The doubles competition was played first and the Falcons managed only one point. That came from the No. 1 team of Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray. The No. 3 match was close as the team of Becky Briese and Sarah VandenHoek lost, 9-8 (8-2). The Falcons would have to win at least four points in the singles competition to win the match. And that's exactly what happened. Picking up points in the singles were No. 2 Gray, No. 4 Amber Weissinger, No. 5 Briese and No. 6 VandenHoek. Anderson and Gray are now 13-0 this year at No. 1 doubles. Briese also stayed undefeated in singles. She is 4-0 at No. 5 and 9-0 at No. 6. Leah Baron, who normally plays at No. 4 sinlges, missed the match with an injury. That forced Weissinger and Briese to move up a spot and VandenHoek to move into the No. 6 spot. All three picked up key wins. The Falcons, now 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC, next travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a WIAC match against the Eagles. River Falls 5, Oshkosh 4 Falcons Beat Hamline, 9-0 Oct. 1, 2003 The Falcons beat Hamline, 9-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Crabtree Courts. The Falcons won all six singles matches in straight sets. Becky Briese stayed undefeated. She played at No. 5 and beat her opponent, 6-0, 6-1. The Falcon No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray also stayed unbeaten with an 8-2 win. The Falcons, now 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC, next host Oshkosh in a conference match on Friday with action starting at 3:30 p.m. River Falls 9, Hamline 0 Falcons Win at Winona, 7-2 Sept. 27, 2003 The Falcons put together a great team effort in earning a 7-2 win at Winona State Saturday morning. The Falcons won five of six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. In the singles matches that the Falcons won, only one went to three sets. Becky Briese remains undefeated after getting a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray also won and improved their records at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to 9-1. They combined at No. 1 doubles to take an 8-5 win and push their record to 11-0. The Falcons next host Hamline on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. River Falls 7, Winona 2 Falcons Win at UW-Stout, 9-0 Sept. 24, 2003 The Falcons improved their WIAC record to 2-1 with a 9-0 win at UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon. UW-RF won all of the singles matches in straight sets. Amber Weissinger topped Stout's Jenna Bettmann at No. 5, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) in the longest match of the day. Becky Briese improved to 10-0 in singles play with her win. The Falcons are now 9-1 overall. The Falcons next play at Winona on Saturday at 10 a.m. River Falls 9, Stout 0 Falcons Beat St. Scholastica, 6-3 Sept. 23, 2003 The Falcons beat St. Scholastica, 6-3 Monday night in a home match, to raise their overall record to 8-1. UW-RF won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches. Becky Briese stayed undefeated in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. The No. 1 doubles team of Amanda Gray and Jordan Anderson also stayed undefeated with an 8-6 win. The Falcons play a WIAC match at UW-Stout on Wednesday with play starting at 3:30 p.m. River Falls 6, St. Scholastica 3 Falcons Blank UW-SP, 9-0 Sept. 19, 2003 The Falcons won every match enroute to a 9-0 win over UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC match played in River Falls Friday afternoon. In singles play the Falcons won every match but one in straight sets. Amanda Gray and Becky Briese each remained undefeated in singles play while the Falcon No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Anderson and Gray also remined undefeated. The win gives the Falcons a 7-1 overall record and the Falcons evened their WIAC record at 1-1. The Falcons host St. Scholastica at 4 p.m. on Monday. River Falls 9, Stevens Point 0 Falcons Top St. Mary's, 8-1 Sept. 17, 2003 The Falcons won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches to top St. Mary's, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Knowles Center. "With the wind blowing so hard, we moved indoors and that will be a big help to us in the future," Falcon Coach Lee Lueck said. "Our younger players had not competed on the surface indoors. Now they've had that experience and that will help them if later in the year we have to move indoors against a WIAC team. Last year we beat St. Mary's 6-3 and the result this year shows how much we've improved. We're 6-1 right now with an important WIAC match with Stevens Point on Friday." The Falcons will next host Stevens Point on Friday with action starting at 3:30 p.m. River Falls 8, St. Mary's 1 Falcons Win at Bethel, 7-2 Sept. 17, 2003 The Falcons won five of six singles matches to get a 7-2 win at Bethel Tuesday afternoon. Amanday Gray and Becky Briese won in singles play and are now 6-0 for the season. Gray, playing at No. 2, beat her opponent, 8-2. Briese, playing at No. 6, won, 8-1. The Falcon No. 1 doubles team of Gray and Jordan Anderson also stayed undefeated with an 8-2 win. The Falcons will next host St. Mary's on Wednesday. The meet starts at 3:30 p.m. River Falls 7, Bethel 2 Falcons Drop WIAC Match at UWW, 5-4 Sept. 13, 2003 The Falcons dropped a 5-4 decision at UW-Whitewater in the team's first WIAC match of the season Saturday morning. The Falcons won three of six singles points, but only managed one point in the three doubles matches. The Falcon No. 1 and 2 singles players, Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray, each won singles points and paired at No. 1 doubles to win. Becky Briese won the other Falcon point at No. 6 singles. UW-RF won all six singles matches and two of three doubles matched. Saturday the Falcons play Edgewood at 2 p.m. River Falls 8, Lakeland 1 Falcons Top St. Norbert, 5-4 Sept. 5, 2003 The Falcons opened their 2003 season with a 5-4 win at St. Norbert on Friday afternoon. UW-RF won four of the six singles matches, and one doubles match, to get the win. Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray, playing No. 1 and 2 singles, both won, and also teammed up to claim a win at No. 1 doubles. Anderson won, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 and Gray won, 6-3, 6-4 in singles. They then won in doubles, 8-1. Leah Baron, playing at No. 4 sinlges, won, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Becky Briese, playing at No. 6, won, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Saturday the Falcons play at Lakeland at 9 a.m. and against Edgewood at 2 p.m. River Falls 5, St. Norbert 4 Doubles |
