Falcons Travel to UW-Stout for WIAC Game
Oct. 21, 2003
|
When: Saturday, Oct. 25 The Falcons go on the road Saturday when they travel to UW-Stout in a WIAC game at Williams Stadium. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. The Falcons picked up their first win of the season in impressive fashion over UW-Platteville last weekend. The Falcons played well in all phases of the 44-21 win. The Falcon offense finished with 516 rushing yards and 589 yards in total offense - both season highs in a single game. The defense allowed 378 yards, the second lowest total of the year. But more importantly the Falcons allowed Platteville's high power offense just 21 points. UW-RF is now 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC. Stout lost a 28-23 decision at home to UW-Whitewater. Stout is 3-3 overall and also 1-2 in the WIAC. The Blue Devils, normally a sure handed team, lost three fumbles and had two passes intercepted. Stout had a dominating 519-271 advantage in total yards, but the turnovers made the difference. UW-RF has a stong inside and outside offensive threat this year. Halfback John Peterlik had a career game last weekend when he carried the ball 33 times and gained 324 yards and scored four touchdowns. It was the third most rushing yards ever recorded in school history - Jim Baier, 370 yards vs. Stevens Point in 1966 and Dave Bednarek, 342 yards vs. Stevens Point in 1983 are tops. This year Peterlik leads the Falcons with 660 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He averages 8.6 yards a carry. Peterlik has gained most of his yards on the outside, but he has run well up the middle when called upon. Most of the running up the middle has been by fullback Owen Schmitt. He is second in rushing with 114 carries and 610 yards. He averages 5.8 yards per attempt and he has scored four times. The pair are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the WIAC in rushing,. The Falcons are the top rushing team in the WIAC (364.6) and also lead the league in total offense (430.2). The Falcon defense played its best game of the year against Platteville and it will need the same type of effort at Stout. Safety Kyle Hoegh leads the team with 36 tackles. Corner Lewis Parish is second with 33 and linebacker Matt Farmer is third with 32. The Falcons have allowed 180 points in five games and are eighth in scoring defense in the WIAC. Last week the Falcons intercepted three passes - one each by Aaron Greisen, O'neal Hampton and Roman Johnson. Jeff Cassellius leads the Falcons with three sacks and Nate Hendrickson leads with four tackles for loss. UW-RF allows 155 rushing and 269.6 passing yards a game. Stout relies on the running of halfback Luke Bundgaard and the passing of Nick Ohman. Bundgaard has rushed for 726 yards and three scores. He averages 5.2 yards a carry. Ohman is 76-160 passing for 1,026 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has been intercepted just four times. He has rushed for 206 yards and scored twice. Dan Austin leads the Blue Devils with 20 catches for 282 yards. He has caught six TD passes. Jesse Wendt has nine catches for 176 yards and one touchdown. Stout averages 28.2 points a game and is third in total offense (414.8). Stout is also third in total defense (310.8) in the WIAC and has allowed 21.8 points a game. Kevin Dewey leads Stout with 47 tackles including two for lost yardage. Jordan Sinz is second with 35 stops and he has intercepted two passes. Matt Mueller leads Stout with seven tackles for loss while Joe Kersten leads in sacks with three. Stout has won the last three games between the two teams, but the Falcons hold a 64-23-1 lead in the all time series. On Nov. 1 the Falcons will be on the road again for a WIAC game. They
travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 1 p.m. contest. |
